APPLE’S STEVE JOBS TAKES LEAVE UNTIL JUNE

Apple Inc.‘s CEO Steve Jobs says he is taking a medical leave of absence until the end of June.  Jobs told employees in an e-mail that his health issues are more complex than he thought. (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i7Moc4v8CqZwrNTz2EkmqkSiNaeQD95N5QF04 1/14)

There goes Apple’s stock price. But seriously, I hope Jobs will be OK.

After Steve Jobs pulled out of giving the keynote at this year’s Macworld, there was rampant speculation once again about his health. The shares took a hit as investors began to worry about whether Jobs would be able to remain at the helm of the company. Despite an obvious distaste for talking publicly about his health, Apple released a letter today from Jobs designed to dispel the rumors that his cancer has returned, but which reveals that a mysterious “hormone imbalance” has caused him to lose weight. It also admits that this health problem indeed was one of the reasons why Jobs won’t be giving the Macworld keynote. (Apple’s chief marketing officer Phil Schiller will be filling in for him instead). (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/01/05/steve-jobs-explains-his-weight-loss-in-healthnote 1/5)

The long-sought convergence of television and the Internet may finally be coming to fruition, according to this report. LG Electronics, for one, is expected to announce today that one of its new lines of HDTVs will enable viewers to browse and order from Netflix‘s vast array of movies and TV shows. The Wall Street Journal (free content) (1/5)

Not much else to add but the Roku Netflix box will soon be able to stream 40,000 Amazon titles on demand, “enabling Roku customers for the first time to watch new release movies titles instantly.” The movies cost as much as the do on Amazon and the box will simply connect to your online account and have no movie adding/browsing functionality. The system should be similar to the current Netflix scheme. (http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/01/05/roku-netflix-box-to-stream-amazon-content 1/5)

Finally…a reason to plug my Roku back in.

Electronics giants Panasonic Corp., Samsung and Texas Instruments will go to this week’s Consumer Electronics Show with what they all feel could be the next big thing in TV-viewing technology: 3-D systems. “Unlike earlier attempts, it’s not just gimmick to try to sell a bad horror movie,” said Texas Instruments’ Doug Darrow. “It’s a whole different picture now.” Los Angeles Times (1/5)

Steve Jobs is not going to deliver this year’s Macworld keynote. We suspected this was coming. But there’s more: Apple has confirmed that this is their last Macworld ever. (http://gizmodo.com/5111773/apple-announces-last-year-at-macworld-no-steve-jobs-keynote 12/16)

Dell, once a virtually untouchable force in the personal-computing business, now, according to this report, finds itself beset by competitors and working to play catch-up in a devastated economy. “It appears they are boxed in on all sides,” said analyst Ashok Kumar of Collins Stewart. “I don’t know how they can possibly extricate themselves from the hole they are in.” The New York Times (12/15)

Sony announced plans Monday to sell movies and music on USB drives, including a special edition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album for $19.99 and movies “The Da Vinci Code” and “Men in Black” for $29.99 each. But, according to this analysis, there may be some concerns about the company’s chosen delivery platform. CNET (12/15)

Hot off of Apple’s Q4 earnings call comes a bit of iPhone news: Alongside 2.6 million Macs and 11 million iPods, Apple managed to sell 6,892,000 iPhones in the fourth fiscal quarter of 2008. In contrast, they sold just 1,119,000 iPhones in fiscal Q4 of 2007. (http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2008/10/21/apple-sells-69-million-iphones-in-q4-of-2008 10/21)

Although radio listening reportedly is up 11% among the 14 to 24 set, the medium’s ad sales were down 6.5% in the first two quarters of 2008, according to this article. The segment is trying to rebuild its ad base by claiming its place on MP3 players and cell phones through FM song-tagging; its first such deal, with Microsoft‘s Zune, offers users of the service access to 450 stations. Analysts say sales of Blu-ray players could be curtailed because economically pinched holiday shoppers will likely opt for less expensive gadgets. “If you can get movies over the wire on demand and have an entire library at your disposal on the screen a la Netflix, that’s the way you’re going to go,” said analyst Roger Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates. A mobile-game advertising agency says that the introduction of iPhones has increased the age of the typical player to 18- to 34-year-olds, a market that is highly sought after. In a report, Greystripe noted that the demo was mainly well-educated and affluent and that these users had been playing games and going online in ever-increasing numbers. cellular-news (U.K.) (10/20)

Two-man startup AppLoop has added to its suite of self-service tools for iPhone developers by launching App Generator, which automatically turns any blog with an RSS feed into a native iPhone app modeled after that of the The New York Times. Broadcasters filed an emergency request with the FCC on Friday urging the agency to slow down plans to open up vacant “white space” spectrum for use by wireless internet devices. The NAB has long maintained that portable devices operating on unused TV spectrum would interfere with TV reception; now it claims the FCC misinterpreted a report released last Wednesday by the commission’s Office of Engineering and Technology detailing interference test data. Apple on Tuesday introduced updated models of its MacBook line of laptop computers that feature an aluminum casing and, on the MacBook Pro and MacBook, sport a glass touchpad that recognizes gestures similar to the company’s iPhone. Global shipments of PCs rose 15% in the third quarter, according to the market-research firm Gartner, but much of the growth came from low-profit, Internet-centric PCs that often sell for under $500. While Gartner said it was hard to pinpoint the market penetration of low-cost PCs, their strong growth contributed to Hewlett-Packard‘s relinquishing its market lead in Europe, Africa and the Middle East for the first time since 2002. The New York Times (10/14) , CNET (10/14)

Makers of the handy dandy Flip Video camcorder have partnered with CafePress to create a new online marketplace to allow designers market their own cigarette pack-sized Flip Mino cameras. Sharp will launch in Japan next month the Aquos DX, an LCD HDTV that the company is calling the first to have a built-in Blu-ray player. The model, which will be offered in a number of sizes, features an integrated HDTV tuner, speakers mounted on the bottom and a Blu-ray player that wraps around the back and side of the screen. With cable TV providers and others offering an increasing amount of their content in high definition, many consumers are opting not to buy Blu-ray disc players, according to this report. But with the holidays approaching, consumer-electronics firms such as Sony and Samsung are offering Blu-ray players with rock-bottom retail entry points in hopes of wooing consumers to the format. The Wall Street Journal (10/15)

InFocus, which once developed state-of-the-art video projectors for office and institutional use, has come out with the X9 DLP, a home-theater projector with native 720p resolution and VGA and HDMI connectors.
