For the first time, fans of the BlackBerry Pearl smartphone can buy a flip model, a move that manufacturer Research in Motion termed “extremely important” for attracting new users. In the U.S., T-Mobile is the exclusive carrier for the Pearl 8220, which carries a 128-by-160 screen and 2-megapixel camera externally and flipped open looks just like a standard clamshell BlackBerry, but features a higher-resolution screen. social address book application to Apple’s App Store to work on both the iPhone and iPod touch. Comcast’s $14.55 billion deal to create a joint venture with Time Warner Cable, Intel, Sprint and Google to deliver high-speed mobile Internet access could be made final by the end of the year, according to Comcast Chief Operating Officer Steve Burke. Research in Motion reportedly will bring a touch-screen BlackBerry to market later this year, a response to the iPhone. Calling it the Thunder, RIM is expected to sell the multimedia handset through exclusive deals with Verizon Wireless in the U.S. and Vodafone in Europe. RIM declined to provide comment on the report. NBC Sports beefed up its mobile content offerings available via video service NBC 2Go. Korean firms Samsung and LG Electronics have announced that they will participate with the U.S.-based Advanced Television Systems Committee’s effort to develop a standard for mobile-DTV broadcasting.
