Some 250 readers of the Kindle are using Amazon.com‘s own book-tagging system to mark e-books priced more than $10 with the tag “9 99 boycott.” Their argument: A Kindle book is more restricted in its use than a paper book and therefore should not cost as much. The Sony compact HDR-TG5V, due out in May for a recommended price of $1,000, will come equipped with GPS capabilities and mapping software allowing tagging and geographic sorting of stored footage. (Cynopsis 4/7)

BODY BRANDING: TATTOO NATE
Meet Nate. He wants to tattoo your company logo on his body.
Here’s the deal. Nate here is the proud new father of twin babies and decided to come up with a way to make extra money for their future. I can dig.
The dynamics of this project? Not so much.
He wants you to pay him $1 for the chance to have your logo imprinted on his body. He won’t make any decision via raffle UNTIL he has $1 million dollars in hand.
So, let’s discuss the obvious issues with this product. What if he NEVER raises the $1 million? What happens to your $1? No answers on that one.
What’s the size of the finished product? His site says no bigger than 2 inches high by 3 wide. But who decides?
Where does the logo live? It’s up to him. That’s like putting up a billboard with NO idea where in the US it will go. Could be Times Square NYC or could be Trigg County (middle of no where) Kentucky.
When I first started reading about his project, I thought it could be a really amazing art project using the human body as the ultimate canvass to display the art of consumerism. For example, he could have decided to tattoo an entire arm or two with several brands for a price. You may scoff, but you know there’s someone out there with the drive to do it. One tattoo, eh. Not that interesting. MULTIPLE tattoos covering a major portion of some area of the body? Now we’re talkin!
I say all this hoping that tattoonate decides to up the ante a little bit. This project could be MUCH more interesting…

ABC is unlikely to attract a big viewership for Sunday’s Oscars telecast, due to the film academy’s snub of box-office hit “The Dark Knight.” The Academy Awards broadcast attracted its largest audience when all-time box-office leader “Titanic” was voted best picture for 1997. Bravo’s season finale of The Real Housewives of Orange County Tuesday night at 10p attracted 1.4 million A18-49 viewers and 1.97 million total viewers. Skipping to the opposite coast and following at 11p, the second season opener of The Real Housewives of New York City delivered 1.23 million A18-49 viewers and 1.64 million total viewers. Comedy Central has ordered seven episodes of “Michael and Michael Have Issues,” which is expected to debut in July. The series will feature comedians Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter, who will play the comic hosts of a TV sketch show who also have some issues to deal with off-stage. Variety (2/18)
Comcast added 247,000 digital-TV customers, 184,000 broadband subscribers and 344,000 digital-phone households in the fourth quarter of 2008, the company reported Wednesday. Overall, revenue was up 9%, to $8.77 billion, but earnings fell 32%, to $412 million, largely because of a $600 million write-down related to Comcast’s investment in the Clearwire wireless-technology initiative. Despite the fact that more than 400 TV stations already have switched to all-digital TV signals, more than 5 million U.S. households are still not ready for the digital-TV transition, according to the latest data from Nielsen. Those found to be least prepared are people younger than 35, African Americans and Hispanics. TVWeek.com (2/18)

ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA
Big media companies have always had a love-hate relationship with YouTube. They don’t know whether to sue YouTube for abetting copyright infringement or get in bed with it because it is the biggest Web video game in town. YouTube is trying to convince them that love is better than war by giving them a cut of advertising revenues from their videos that appear on YouTube, regardless of who put them there. (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/01/21/exclusive-youtube-will-soon-let-big-content-partners-bring-their-own-ads 1/21)
Here’s the moral of the story kids. Don’t try to control the uncontrollable. Monetize it instead. If only media companies could start thinking this way, consumers everywhere would rejoice.

New York City has just launched a revamped webportal at NYCgo
, which now offers an extensive database of events, restaurants, hotels, and other points of interest. All of these are tied into the Google Maps API, making it easier for visitors to quickly find things to do in their vicinity without having to hunt down their hotel’s concierge. The site will also include a listing of promotions and discounts, like the incredibly popular Restaurant Week
, during which upscale restaurants offer meals at a flat (and heavily discounted) rate. (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/01/21/nyc-teams-with-google-to-launch-its-own-citysearch 1/21)
Online video sites such as TV.com, Hulu and Joost, which offer much of the same content, are building more social-networking applications into their portals as a way to differentiate themselves and build loyalty. TV.com, for instance, allows viewers to comment on and review videos, enter discussion forums and even create their own blogs. BusinessWeek (1/19)

JAYZ GETS IN RAINBOWS
One part Jay Z and one part Radiohead, Jaydiohead is the mash-up album from NYC producer Minty Fresh Beats. Wrong Prayer…so wrong yet so right. Shout to Rish for droppin’ the love on his Facebook page.

WELCOME TO CELL ACCESS VIA YOUR WRIST
A few moments ago, LG officially announced their LG watch phone. As a girl who is accused of being unable to let go of her phone in any situation, the watch phone presents an interesting solution. To be fair, I live in New York City where the noise on NYC streets is unbearable on a good day. If I don’t hear the ring over the din of the chaos or feel the vibration through my heavy wool coat, I could miss that next critical call. Chuck Bass sighting on 13th and Avenue A? Yah, missed call. And yes, I live in fear of this particular crisis.
The LG GD910 presents cell phone with Bluetooth capability at wrist level. The device streamlines phone usage loaded simply with three buttons. After viewing Engadget’s video demo from last year (and yes the phone was at CES ’08 as a prototype), usage seems fairly simple. And unlike most other phones I know of (cough, mine, cough cough), this one is water resistant. So if you find yourself in the crazy shitestorm of a weather pattern running across the northeast or northwest, no problem. Phone on my friends.
Production to start late 2009.
