Microsoft personnel are working around the clock to restore personal data lost during a recent outage of the company’s Sidekick mobile device, and Steve Ballmer, the software giant’s chief executive officer, says his company needs to do more to assure enterprise customers that a similar mistake won’t occur in the future. Google is said to be planning to release its own smartphone directly through retailers, as opposed to through a carrier partnership, in what could be a huge disruption to the industry’s business model. Washington will be the first U.S. city to get free digital television broadcasts for mobile devices, broadcasters are set to announce Monday. Broadcasts using new “mobile DTV” technology are expected to begin in late summer, according to the so-called Open Mobile Video Coalition. The official Skype iPhone application, announced earlier this week, hit the iTunes Store last Tuesday and since then it’s seen an astonishing one million downloads to the popular Apple devices, which is nothing short of amazing. Local review sites like Yelp have irrevocably changed the way consumers find businesses in a particular area, and truly given power to the consumer in finding the best place to eat a meal, grab a drink, etc. And the potential of putting local reviews and listings on mobile devices is immense. Yelp’s existing iPhone app is less than a year old and it already accounts for 5% of Yelp’s overall traffic, which adds up to be around roughly 1 million monthly visitors.  In the next few days, Yelp will be launching a new version of its popular iPhone app. (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/04/02/yelp-focuses-on-mobile-new-and-improved-iphone-app-coming-soon/ 4/2)

Samsung Mobile has figured out a new way to deliver content to mobile devices. A new collaboration with Paramount Digital will preload the Mission Impossible trilogy of films on a 2G microcard, available for free with the purchase of a touchscreen Samsung Drive from Alltel Wireless. Buyers must mail in proof of purchase by April 16 to receive the microcard. (Cynopsis 2/24)

Hollywood studios may change the way they pay actors, directors and producers as DVD sales decline, says Sony Pictures chief Michael Lynton. “It’s not so much cutting salaries but making sure our partners share in the risk.” Studios can no longer count on DVD sales. HP has reported that its profit fell 13% in the first quarter, while overall revenue showed a less-than-expected increase of 1%. Young, multicultural consumers are on the leading edge, embracing new media platforms; especially video-enabled handled devices, according to a new Horowitz Associates’ Broadband Content and Services 2008 report. The study found that nearly nine in ten (86%) of 15 to 17 year-old Internet users have a handheld device, whether it is a cell phone (69%), an iPod or other MP3 player (66%), a PSP (31%) or a Smartphone (12%). One quarter (26%) of 15 to 17 year-old users pay for internet access on their cell phone, compared to 11% of 35 to 49 year-old users.  Similarly, one quarter (24%) of 15 to 17 year-old Internet users watch video on their handheld devices on a monthly basis.
