Despite registering an 8% gain in revenue from its television sets, Royal Philips Electronics announced that the company’s overall net was off 54%, to $1.15 billion, in the second quarter. The Dutch firm, the fifth-largest maker of LCD TVs in the world, reported $2.16 billion in revenue from TV sales during the period.

Acer is talking with a group of 3G network operators about building 3G capabilities into the company’s Aspire one mini-laptops. U.K.-based Meridian has introduced the M810 digital home-theater video system, a projector/processor that can deliver crystal-clear 10-megapixel resolutions. The system, with a contrast ratio that can exceed 10,000:1, is expected to cost about $175,000. (CEPro.com 6/19)

Sanyo will aim to serve the custom outdoor market with the introduction in October of a 52-inch waterproof LCD TV — the CE52SR1 — that has full 1080p performance, the company said. Wireless HDTV will be the next hot product — after phones, Internet and home networking — according to ABI Research, which predicted that the number of wireless HD installations will rise more than tenfold worldwide to 1 million by 2012. Consumers willing to pay a premium may be able to buy LCD TV monitors later this year equipped with new technology from Dolby that the company says will solve the contrast issues that affect LCD sets. Dolby said its high-dynamic-range technology could brighten or darken an individual monitor’s LED backlights to more precisely adjust the picture. (Electronic House 4/29)

The “LaserVue” HD set that Mitsubishi demonstrated in prototype form in January will roll out in stores in the fall, the company said, although it added that it would not release pricing and spec details until June. The first laser-powered televisions, which will likely be a higher-end item, were designed to give viewers greater levels of contrast, black and color saturation compared with comparably sized plasma and LCD models. Sony will introduce a wider range of Blu-ray electronics, including an integrated HD LCD TV with the ability to record, in an effort to increase the technology’s market share from 20% to 50% by the end of the year, Sony Electronics President and CEO Ryoji Chubachi said at a news conference.
