With the end of the first quarter of the 2009 almost here, even the strongest companies companies are making last-minute layoffs to shave costs. Today, layoffs were announced across the tech sector, from IBM to Google to Amazon. The biggest layoffs came from IBM, where 5,000 people are losing their jobs in the U.S.. Amazon cut 210 people at three distribution centers in Nevada, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. Google also announced layoffs of 200 people from sales and marketing (so far, engineers have been spared). In all three cases, the job cuts amounted to roughly one percent of each company’s global workforce. The New York Times also announced a 5 percent cut of its newsroom, or 100 people. “Ambivalent Networkers” — primarily males in their late 20s — admit to being glued to their mobile devices. Still, they would like to “take a break” from all the new technologies, says a study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Revenue from mobile-broadband services will reach $137 billion by 2014, a more than 400% rise from current levels, according to a report from Ovum, a consultancy and research firm. The report also predicts that average revenue per user will decline as the number of users will outpace the growth in sales. InformationWeek (3/25)

Sharp Electronics and Sony on Wednesday will christen Sharp Display Products Corp., a new joint-venture company to produce LCD TV panels. Hewlett-Packard has debuted the new Pavilion Elite m9600 desktop, which is powered by Core i7 processors and has up to 1TB of hard drive storage and Blu-ray options. The company also introduced a suite of new LCD monitors featuring HDMI connectivity. Digital Trends (3/25)

The first-quarter 2009 reliability rankings by computer-service chain Rescuecom do not hold good news for Apple’s Mac. For the first time, Mac dropped out of first place and fell to third, where it now must look up at Asian computer makers Asustek Computer and Lenovo Group. Computerworld (3/25)

Vizio has announced that it will get out of the plasma-TV business, concentrating instead on bringing new innovations to market with its line of LCD models, according to Laynie Newsome, who co-founded the company five years ago. The company’s departure leaves LG, Samsung and Panasonic as the only large-scale makers of plasma-TV screens being offered in the U.S. The New York Times (2/11)

LG has introduced the XCanvas, an LCD TV with a four-step energy-conservation system. The line — available in 47-, 42- and 32-inch models — aims to reduce power by 70% with options for minimum sleep, intermediate sleep, hibernate and screen off. Pocket-lint.co.uk (2/11)

Philips is developing a new 56-inch, liquid-crystal-display TV that features a theaterlike aspect ratio of 21:9. When it comes to electronics slim is always in. Samsung is set to unveil its latest flat panel TV at CES that is between just 6.5 and 7 mm thick. It utilizes LED technology for its backlight. The set will be marketed as the thinnest LCD TV yet to hit the marketplace. (Cynopsis 1/6)

While sales of Blu-ray discs cheered the market to some extent, total 2008 sales of home videos are expected to fall 3% to 4% from the $15.38 billion spent during the previous year, according to this report. Royal Philips Electronics suffered a 70% increase in operating losses at its TV-manufacturing division in the third quarter as sales fell 21% and revenue from the sector made up 19% of its parent company’s top-line results compared with 23% a year earlier. In a move that could start a new wave in PC sales, Dell and Paramount Pictures today announced that they have signed a joint venture that will see “Iron Man” come pre-loaded on Dell computers for anyone who wishes to order the unit. Another drawn-out court battle is brewing over consumer rights to digital content with the official release of RealNetworks’ RealDVD software. RealDVD allows Windows users to make a digital copy of store-bought DVDs (extras and all) and save a backup copy of the movie to their hard drives for transfer to DVD-R. RealNetworks figures the product is legal because it leaves CSS encryption intact, making uploading and sharing of the ripped DVD a challenge. But just to be sure, the Seattle-based company filed a pre-emptive lawsuit against the studios and the MPAA yesterday asking for a declaratory judgment protecting it against legal action. Sure enough the MPAA cried foul, filing a temporary restraining order itself against RealNetworks for violation of copyright protections. MPAA attorney Greg Goeckner even managed to insert a pithy one-liner into the brief, referring to RealDVD as “StealDVD.” (Cynopsis 10/1)

Sony demonstrated an 11-inch superthin monitor and a 27-inch TV set that were both based on organic light-emitting diode technology at an industry show in Japan on Tuesday. To win a bigger share of the global electronics marketplace, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. is rebranding as Panasonic Corp., discarding a 90-year-old corporate identity. The company currently markets three electronics brands — Matsushita, National and Panasonic. Of these, Panasonic has the highest global profile, according to a survey by the consultancy Interbrand. The certification will allow Panasonic to market its tru2way technology, which enables interactive digital features without a set-top box. The company plans to introduce 42- and 50-inch tru2way TVs in time for the holidays. Light Reading (9/30)
