America’s Best Dance Crew finale on MTV Thursday night delivered a 2.97 rating among the 12-34 set, the highest delivery for this series, season to date, out delivering it season to date average of 2.2 rating by 22%. Nielsen released its January Video Census numbers revealing that total video streams topped 10 billion in the U.S. for the first time. Live streaming of President Obama’s inauguration helped increase the overall internet video audience increased to 135 million. After a basically flat Dec., YouTube increased its traffic by a measurable clip to 5.8 billion streams from 92 million unique users, up from 5.5 billion streams/84 million users in Dec. Following its Superbowl ad campaign, the aliens at Hulu rolled past Fox Interactive Media to the #3 ranking in terms of total streams while ABC nearly doubled its video viewer base from 3.5 million to 6.2 million. HBO‘s seven-part miniseries “John Adams” as well as ongoing series “In Treatment” and “True Blood” were big winners during Sunday evening’s Golden Globes competition. The documentary on the second U.S. president received recognition for its two lead characters, Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney as John and Abigail Adams, while Tom Wilkinson’s turn as Benjamin Franklin won an award for best supporting actor. I couldn’t be a bigger fan of John Adams.  If you haven’t seen it, the multiple hours you’ll put into watching it are surely worth it.  Favorite moment from last night?  Slumdog Millionaire wining in the film category.  That movie is candy land for the soul.

Production has begun in New York for season two of HBO’s In Treatment, the 30m drama starring Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Wiest. American TV viewers continue to be infatuated with the NFL. Based on a report from Nielsen, 225 million Americans tuned into NFL regular season games last year. Other football TV watching stats include: 13 of the 15 most-watched television programs from all programming this fall included NFL games; NFL games were the highest-rated programs locally at a record 88%; and in 2008 NFL games airing on CBS, FOX and NBC averaged 16.6 million viewers which equates to 89% over the 8.8 million average primetime viewership among the four major networks: ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC. Screen Actor Guild (SAG) leaders in New York are distancing themselves from SAG leaders based in Hollywood and have asked the guild to halt its strike authorization vote, writes Variety. The NY division leaders cite the nation’s crippling financial crisis as their reason to stop the strike vote. According to B&C, NBC will be moving Jay Leno to 10p on weeknights, thereby allowing NBC to cut back on its primetime programming as well as keeping both Leno and Conan O’Brien in house.  The start date is as yet unknown, but speculation pegs next fall. (Cynopsis 12/9)

Co-President Harold Akselrad has decided to leave HBO after 25 years, the network announced Tuesday.  Mr. Akselrad recently concluded negotiations with several of the studios that supply the pay cable network with theatrical movies. Billionaire real estate investor Sam Zell was unable to keep the wolves from the door as The Tribune Company filed for bankruptcy protection in federal court in Delaware on Monday. The company will restructure debt obligations and says it has the cash to continue to operate its media businesses during the process. It also reassured advertisers its broadcasting affiliations and pre-paid ad contracts are still in place. Zell described the move as a reaction to a “perfect storm” of factors including a rapid decline in revenue and severe tightening of credit markets. Comcast debuted a trio of new triple-play packages, ranging from $115 per month to $180 per month.
