Nokia is partnering with Island Def Jam Music and UMG International artist Rihanna to promote its new X6 handset, which ships with Nokia’s Comes With Music unlimited streaming service. Rihanna will perform select tracks from her new album “Rated R” in London on Nov. 16, and the show will be broadcast live at nokia.com/rihanna and streamed to Nokia handsets. The site will also feature UGC-uploaded videos shot by attendees via their Nokia X6 phones. Nokia will make an exclusive Rihanna application and exclusive footage from her London gig available at the Ovi Store and in selected territories, as well as an exclusive window to the track, ‘Wait Your Turn’ from the album before its release. Can someone send me a Nokia phone so I can watch? I never realized how adorable her accent is.

Twitter plans to unveil a “geolocation” feature that will make the flood of tweets on a particular subject more relevant. Twitter will employ GPS on cellphones to allow users to include a precise location with each tweet. “Proximity can be this proxy for relevance.” (Iwantmedia11/9, NYT11/9)

3-D TV — despite some significant roadblocks that include a lack of industry standards and online-streaming issues — is gathering buzz on a number of fronts in the TV community. ESPN, for one, has conducted a number of tests, and the network’s Chuck Pagano remains somewhat hopeful: “From our judgment, when the fans see it, they’re going to be blown away by it. But there’s still a lot of challenges ahead.” Variety (4/16)

Garmin has come out with a new, slim GPS device dubbed the nuvi 1490T. The Bluetooth-equipped device has a five-inch touch screen, the ability to save up to 10 routes in its memory and a feature called ecoRoute, which aids drivers with fuel-efficient navigation suggestions. BIKING: GEEK FABULOUS STYLE by Marauder

BIKING: GEEK FABULOUS STYLE

Yesterday afternoon, I got a chance to catch up with Tarikh and Josh from Uncommon Projects and ride the GPS-enabled Yahoo bike. They worked with Yahoo’s Buzz Marketing team to develop 20 of these bright purple bikes loading each with geek fabulous technology that this little blogstress can’t get enough of. Here’s a look at the on board tech:

Tech Out Your Roll

ride-like-a-girl

  • Nokia N95 phone with GPS and camera (lives within this box on the handlebars): The camera automatically snaps pictures every 1 -2 minute intervals on your ride. I particularly love the “Ride like a girl” sticker its former owner in Maine affixed to the bike. Rock on girl. The photos are automatically uploaded to a flickr account. Check out my Dumbo ride’s photo set here. Considering how much the bike shakes while in motion (especially on the cobblestones of Dumbo), the clarity of some of these photos was incredible.
  • Solar-Powered Battery System: Solar Panels on the back of the bike keep the N95 charged for up to 2 weeks on a single charge. Very nice.

My only request would be some speakers. I rode with a guy in Cali who had an iPod connected speaker which fit snuggly into his water bottle holder. I think we listened to M.I.A.’s Paper Planes at least 10 times from San Francisco to LA. Rolling ghetto blaster. Loves it.

The Ride

This photo was taken from the bike’s N95 camera. Click on either photo above or below for the entire trip’s Flickr photostream. First thing, perhaps don’t attempt a Yahoo bike ride wearing heels and a dress. Here lies my first mistake. Secondly, don’t attempt to ride down a cobblestone street and then try to cross exposed rail. Blarg! I bit it on the streets of Dumbo within 2 minutes of test driving the bike. Luckily, the bike took a sweet picture of the road after my fall (see below) and more importantly, I didn’t ruin the bike. Sigh.

The Fall

I first saw the bike last year when I noticed some pictures of the bright purple monster on a friend’s photo stream. Since then, I have begged Yahoo for my own, a request I have been assured will be fulfilled for the upcoming Bike NY in May. 40 miles, the bright purple monster, and me. Stay tuned for the photo stream and honk if you see bright purple, two wheels, and a Daily Marauder sticker. And perhaps don’t drive too close. I’m prone to fall…

Mobile ads served on the iPhone platform have been extremely effective in terms of response rates – particularly those that take advantage of the device’s GPS capabilities, according to research from Limbo and GfK NOP quoted by eMarketer. About one half of iPhone users who were served ads responded to them compared to a 33% non-iPhone response rate. Recall among iPhone users came it at 41% compared to 33% for other users. iPhone users are more than twice as likely as non-iPhone users to browse the mobile Web on their phone and more than three times as likely to use location-based services, including maps, restaurant locators and friend finders. Transit planner HopStop launched its free iPhone application last week to rival the mobile version of Google Map’s Transit option. The application, with support from iPhone’s GPS functionality, offers all the same services as the website. This includes trip customization, maps marked with nearby subways and bus stops, a taxi mode that estimates time and cost of travel and contact information for taxi companies, and the ability to re-route transit plan provided. iPhone dating app HotorNot introduced on Jan. 21 is answering its own question in the affirmative, climbing to the #4 ranking in the social network category at the iTunes store.  The free social networking application works much like the site, allowing users to rate members (on a “hotness” scale of 1 -10), buy and send virtual gifts or chat in real time. HotorNot says the app has generated nearly 7 million ratings and over 3.5 million yes and no votes since its launch. (Cynopsis 2/9)

Despite the good news that it has gained market share on big-ticket CE items such as home-theater systems and GPS devices, Best Buy on Tuesday reported a sharp drop in net profit as well as some cost-cutting measures. For its fiscal quarter that ended Nov. 29, the retailer’s net profit fell 77%, to $52 million, as opposed to $228 million during the comparable period in 2007. Those free iPhone apps will soon be filled with ads. VideoEgg is the latest ad network to extend its ads to the iPhone. The company is known for its video and social-app ads that entice people to click on them to open up a Flash window filled with videos, maps, or apps that let consumers learn more about a brand.
