Mike D, from the Beastie Boys, calls his curated exhibition at MOCA LA, Transmission LA, “an amusement park for adults.” I think that aptly sums up the experience. I took a spin to the Museum of Contemporary Art this past Saturday to take a look myself. From the Roy Choi/Mike D collaboration on the menu at the KOGI Truck to the art nestled inside, It was a feast for the senses. Here’ a few pics. If you’re in the LA area, you have until this Sunday to take a spin of your own.

GOT LATTE ART? THESE GUYS DO
Photo & Pour Credit: Chris Alameda (Intelligentsia/Venice, CA)
A couple of nights ago, after a long digi-action-packed day at Digital Hollywood, I rolled up at my friend Sirin’s house for some yummie dinner. I was shocked and delightfully surprised to find Pro-Pourer Christopher Alameda from Intelligentsia in the house. As a former New Yorker, I expect over-cooked pasta or grilled cheese when invited over for dinner. As we all know, New Yorkers hardly use their stoves. OK…you know I’m talking about the ‘hattan. Anyways, the first thing that threw me for a loop was the rack of lamb simmering away in the oven. The second, was the fact that I knew incredible coffee was to be coming my way post- dinner.
But, let me back up for a second. Over the past year, I have slowly become more and more passionate about my coffee brew experience. It started when I visited Ritual in San Francisco and sought out the Clover machine experience. All I knew about the Clover was was that it was developed by a guy from Ideo, but then again, that’s all I needed to know really.

Later, I also took a visit to Blue Bottle Coffee, also in San Francisco, and checked out the filter drip method of serving coffee.

Back home in NYC, I settled in with some local coffee favorites, including by far my #1, Gimme Coffee in Brooklyn. On any given week day or night, you would have found me computer-deep at Gimme Coffee with latte in hand while I was living in New York (I’ve since moved to LA). My obsession with Gimme was dual purpose really. I loved their coffee…and I wanted to become the mayor on Foursquare. (All those who claim on 4Square that I cheated in my quest to become mayor can suck it cry babies.)

It is here that I first started paying attention to this concept of latte art. To define it, steamed milk is poured into a shot of espresso to create the resulting design. At first, I thought the foamy shapes on top of my favorite espresso brew were mere flirtations from my barista. That ended when I realized that my barista gave many patrons the frothy foam heart. Traitor… I soon began to rate my barista’s ability to deliver on something impressive from rosettas to things even more impressive. Speaking of which, not to call out my former local shop, but when you half ass it Ninth Street Espresso, I judged. You still make a mean cup of coffee tho.
It’s not until I had a long conversation with Chris and Katie from Intelligentsia in LA, that I realized this coffee latte art was more serious than I had originally considered.
To demonstrate this, there art a number of barista championships around the world from the World Latte Championship to the World Barista Championship.

If you need further convincing on the seriousness of the art or the competition, take a look at a video of Stephen Morrissey, The 2008 World Barista Champion.
So, if you dare, go get your latte art on. But please, don’t try it using that sad little Krups machine you have at home.

STARBUCKS SENDS ME SOME ENERGY: DOUBLESHOT + A USB COOLER
Starbucks (thanks Elavia) sent me a care package this week with the essential ingredients for good blog-making: caffeinated beverages and a USB cooler as powered by my computer. Coming to grocery and convenience stores this month, you’ll find the Starbucks Doubleshot drinks.
They come in 4 flavors including vanilla, coffee, mocha, and cinnamon dulce. I sit sipping the new flavor, cinnamon dulce as we speak. It tastes like a cinnamon bun mixed with a little milk. Not exactly my drink of choice but for you sweet drink junkies out there, this is for you. I mean, I’m the girl who drinks her coffee black with no sugar. I’m also a little intimidated by the size of the can. Think of the extra large version of the Red Bull can and you’ve arrived at the size of this product. Who drinks this much beverage all at once? Luckily, my clumsiness kicked in and I spilled my can all over my desk.
My intrigue over this particular care package really comes from the USB cooler/warmer. Plug this device into your computer via USB to keep any beverage warm or cool. There’s a separate switch on the back for either. I like to let my beverage linger on my desk over several hours. Now, at least I can keep it at relatively the right temperature. Ingenius. Click here for one of your very own.

GOT WI-FI?: RITUAL COFFEE ROASTERS SAN FRANCISCO
This morning, I asked the friend I was staying with in San Francisco where I could get a good cup of coffee around his apt. He replied, in his South African accent, with what sounded to me like “Ritchel.” After a quick Google search and a text message in his direction, I realized he was saying “Ritual” and it happened to be located just down the block. I didn’t realize it at the time, but he was sending me to the mecca of San Francisco coffee drinkers.

As I stepped into the coffee shop, I noticed that they had Clover coffee on the menu. To those of you non coffee-obsessed, the Clover machine was designed by a former IDEO product designer, who made it his objective to make the best damn coffee in the world. This machine is what you would imagine from an Inspector Gadget cartoon, doling out the perfect tempered water matched to the perfect amount of just-ground coffee. The inner machinations of the Clover involve a host of complex computer settings and a smattering of precisely-firing water pumps. Let’s just say, I had heard of the machine before. I had tried coffee from a Clover machine before at Café Grumpy in NYC and it was good. . .just not quite THIS good.
The story
The shop opened in May 2005, commencing their coffee revolution with Stumptown coffee, a legend among coffee roasters and flown in from Portland, Oregon. As a side note, my favorite coffee shop in NYC (9th Street Espresso) also sells Stumptown. After commencing operations with someone else’s award-winning coffee, Ritual acquired a coffee roaster and began the roasting process on their own. Fly high little birdie.
Food/Beverage Selection

The selection of food stuffs includes mostly pastries but a myriad of great ones to choose from at that. I went with the Lavender Lemon Cake. For the vegan in you, they have a variety of options as well. Ah, San Francisco. The coffee, as aforementioned, is excellent but they also have a tea option if for some reason, you opt for it instead.
Wi-Fi Action
Pretty freakin’ speedy. I can’t say that I actually ran a speed test at the time as I was pressed for quarters in my parking meter, but I can tell you that I sped through tasks with the efficiency of my home-brewed Wi-Fi. Free of course. Very nice.
Final Call
Loves it. I now have one thing to do first every time I step off a plane in San Francisco and that’s head for Ritual Coffee Roasters. To say their coffee changed my palate, would be putting it meekly. I have never had a coffee that intensely amazing in my life.
