Viacom’s Nickelodeon cable network is asking its young audience to unplug their hand-held gadgets, games and cell phones for a minute on Earth Day to symbolize a commitment to helping the environment. The “unplugged minute,” however, doesn’t extend to television sets. (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gX39rdF0RVQBZXsbi3HuFIKNKqoAD9754V301 3/25)
Best Buy Co. reported that profit fell 23% in its fiscal fourth quarter because of depressed consumer demand coupled with overly steep cuts in inventory levels. On the bright side, the consumer-electronics giant beat Wall Street forecasts and picked up market share in the wake of Circuit City’s liquidation. RaySat Broadcasting, which has taken over development work on AT&T’s new CruiseCast in-car satellite-TV service, has retained a handful of vendors to work on key technological aspects of the platform, RaySat said. AT&T, which has not disclosed when the 42-channel service — 20 audio and 22 video — will launch, is said to be finalizing programming contracts that its U-verse IPTV group has been negotiating with content providers. Mobile Web usage is still a nascent activity, but comScore put out some data on the information-consumption habits of consumers in the U.S. The number of people who access news and information daily on their mobile phones doubled from 10.8 million in January, 2008 to 22.4 million in January, 2009. The big news out of SXSW over the weekend (besides AT&T‘s poor network coverage in Austin) is the launch of Facebook Connect - the social network’s technology for sharing data between Facebook and other apps – for the iPhone. The integration will allow developers to build or adapt existing applications to share data with users’ profiles including rich media such as photos. Even developers of popular applications like shakeable restaurant review app Urbanspoon have trouble gaining market share due to the sheer explosion of competitors. Now Urbanspoon users will be able to easily share their reviews with friends in their Facebook feeds, exponentially increasing the ability for apps to grow virally. More than 6,000 websites now utilize Facebook Connect to integrate with the 175 million-member social network. (Cynopsis 3/16)
fbFund, a $10 million seed fund focused on supporting entrepreneurs who are building their business around Facebook.com or with Facebook Connect, is now accepting applications for its third funding round. The fund, which is backed by Facebook, Founders Fund and Accel Partners, is shifting its focus to funding Web and iPhone app developers leveraging Facebook Connect. In the past, fbFund focused on the broad spectrum of successful and promising applications built on the Facebook Platform. Makers of personal computers have begun invading the turf of mobile-phone manufacturers as they have rushed into developing phones that combine the power of PCs and the mobility of cell phones, industry observers noted. “The action is really with the smartphones where everyone is competing to cram the most features into a phone,” said chip analyst Linley Gwennap, head of the Linley Group. “I think of PCs as just kind of boring these days.” The New York Times (3/15)

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said Tuesday that he expected Google to move its Android wireless software onto laptop PCs and that he saw Google as a potential rival to the Windows desktop operating system. Speaking to financial analysts, Ballmer said that rather than make its own handsets, Microsoft would focus on stretching its mobile software over more devices for both basic smartphones and high-end handsets. AT&T has added a feature that detects when users are nearing their monthly mobile data allotment and shuts off their online access when they reach that limit. Designed primarily as a parental-control device, the application will run postpaid customers $4.99 per line and includes a content filter. The Orange County Register (Calif.) (2/24)

Sling Media
, the company behind the popular (and very cool) settop boxes that allow you to stream cable from your house to your computer, looks like it has outdone itself. At this week’s Macworld the company will be showing off its upcoming iPhone application, which effectively gives iPhone owners instant access to their Cable TVs and Tivos from anywhere they have a network connection. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a little longer (the company says that the app will be submitted to Apple some time in Q1), but it looks like it will be well worth the wait. Yesterday, a reason to hook back up my Roku and now a reason to start using my Sling Box again. It’s a good Tuesday morning. I would much rather watch TV from my iPhone than my 17” laptop. Yes, I know. Very bad purchase decision indeed.
Consumers can buy refurbished iPhone 3G models at Best Buy for $149 and $249, a $50 discount from their original prices, the retailer said today. Buyers must sign a two-year contract with AT&T, which also offers discounted iPhones on its Web site. Yahoo!/Reuters (1/6)
