Best Buy is joining the ranks of retailers offering Apple’s iPhone without a contract. The device, sans contract, will retail at $599 for the 8GB model and $699 for the 16GB model. Wal-Mart is now the only iPhone retailer that doesn’t offer the device contract-free. Dealerscope (4/6)

Verizon Wireless has said that it will become the first carrier to offer MP3s in an online app market opening Tuesday that will feature other downloadable mobile applications. To save energy and reduce carbon emissions, Google said it would provide software to allow consumers, over their telephones or computer, to monitor electricity consumption in their homes. Google said it was in talks with utilities in the U.S., Europe and Asia to distribute the open-source software that will provide homeowners with information that can save them 5% to 15% a month on their utility bills, according to some studies. Boston Power’s Sonata batteries, which are said to have a three-year life span, are now being sold by Hewlett-Packard under its Enviro brand. The batteries work on 18 different HP laptops and are being sold for $149.99 each. InformationWeek (3/16) , CNET (3/16)

There are no official statistics available as how well the iPhone sells after Apple started offering it in the Japanese market. Now Softbank Mobile, one of Asia’s biggest tech companies and the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in Japan, thinks sales need a boost and decided to give away the hardware basically for free. Google has made its Android Market app store off-limits to those who bought an unlocked version of its G1 handsets as the company moves to prevent them from accessing copy-protected applications. Thanks to the spike in mobile internet use and the push toward mobile TV services, U.S. mobile advertising search, SMS and display revenues will grow to $3.1 billion in 2013, up from a nascent $160 million in 2008, according to The Kelsey Group, a division of BIA Advisory Services. Apple’s share of the global smartphone market is likely to grow as high as 40% by 2013, a seismic shift that would unseat Nokia as the world’s No. 1 handset manufacturer, according to a report from Generator Research, a U.K. market-analysis firm. Apple will buy organic light emitting diode displays from South Korea’s LG Display that the iPhone maker will install on its handsets, iPods and computers, LG announced. LG added in a government filing that Apple would send the world’s second-largest maker of LCD screens a $500 million advance under the five-year deal. OLEDs are next-generation flat panels that not only will improve current LCD performance and use less power but also enable companies to build thinner devices with longer battery life. Motorola is following up on its pledge to introduce 50 new devices this year with the rollout of a pair of low-end handsets, a cameraphone for music lovers for under $100 and a basic 3G model that will cost less than $250, the company said. YouTube‘s latest scheme for monetizing its massive audience is to let content creators sell their own ads via click-to-expand overlays that run across the bottoms of YouTube videos, per AdAge. Professional content producers have shared in revenue from ads sold by Google so far on their own branded YouTube channels. YouTube will demand the same revenue split for creators’ own ads. Ad revenues at YouTube have nowhere to go but up. The online video juggernaut is expected to earn just $90-$200 million this year, while Google is expected to take in $22 billion overall. This morning, Hitwise came out with its search market share numbers for May, 2008. Above is a music video for Pork & Beans from Weezer’s forthcoming self-titled album due in stores and online 6.24.08. Currently the music video, which was uploaded on May 23rd, has amassed over 4.5 million views with most viewers watching on YouTube before the video premiered on MTV (late Tuesday). The genius of the video is in its parody of online video culture which seems more like a skit on SNL than a music video. It’s pretty freakin’ hysterical. Check it.
