HOLIDAY GIFTING WITH A LITTLE HEART: GOOD SHOP by Marauder

HOLIDAY GIFTING WITH A LITTLE HEART: GOOD SHOP

Good Shop is a web site which helps you shop like you normally do, but with a little heart. Here’s an example. Let’s say you were looking for a fun holiday dress to wear to that company party to impress your Office Crush. Clearly, something short is in order.

Aqua Brocade Combo Dress from Bloomingdales

Buy this dress for the same price it’s listed at ($98) but donate to the charity of your choice at the same time.

So, now in this case, I would start by going to goodshop.com, entering in the store I’m looking for (Bloomingdales) and the charity I want to donate to (Art Start). I will then be re-directed to the Bloomingdale’s site to purchase the dress in the same way I always have: browse and order. In this case, 2% of that $98, has now been donated to my favorite charity: Art Start. Some retailers offer up to 30% of each purchase to the selected charity.

Easy. Breezy. Beautiful. With Heart.

In addition, retailers offer coupons to shoppers who shop through the site.

This holiday season, take an extra step, head to goodshop.com and feel good about yourself. More importantly, raise a little money for those who so need it.

The ASPCA has raised over $30K so far and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a disease my cousin so sadly died from, has raised over $12K. These numbers are a culmination of money raised from this site goodshop.com as well as their corresponding search site goodsearch.com. Impressive for a few pennies donated here and there. It’s the Office Space strategy for charities…oh yah, and this one is legal.

But it’s an annoying extra step you say? Yes, I agree. It is an extra step. But in this case, it’s for a good cause. If you’ve ever volunteered your time for an AIDS Walk or a telemarketing drive, this takes way less time than that. Now, go get that cute little dress, make out with your office crush and think about all that money you donated to charity while you do the walk of shame.

After previously only having an option to rent HD movies, back in March, Apple added the option to be able to buy HD as well. The problem? A complete and utter lack of options. Even now, some 8 months later, there were only a few dozen HD movies you could buy, and the majority were movies like The Midnight Meat Train— movies you probably had no desire to buy, let alone for the amped-up $19.99 HD price. Yesterday, that changed. (Techcrunch11/10)

While PCs have been able to use Google’s Chrome browser for some time now, the rest of us Macs have been waiting patiently for a proper, non-developer build that we too can use. That day may be coming very soon. (Mashable 11/11)

Well, the spirit of giving arrived a little early this year! For my birthday last month, Google announced it was partnering to offer free Wi-Fi on all Virgin America flights until January 15th. Great, thanks Google, now I have to check the feeds even while flying at 500MPH. But I guess that just wasn’t enough kindness to satisfy the Goog. They’ve just announced that they’re going to be extending the free Wi-Fi to 47 entire airports. (Crunchgear11/10)

Now that in-app purchasing has been live for a few weeks in the iTunes App Store, and Apple is now ranking the top-grossing apps, whether they start out as free or paid, we have some initial data on what kinds of apps are pulling in the most money from in-app purchases. (In-app purchases allow apps to offer a free version and then make money by requiring consumers to pay for additional features or content). Today, Distimo put out a report (download it here ) which breaks down the top 40 grossing in-app purchasing titles by category. Games, social networking, and Book apps are doing the best job upselling consumers from free apps to paid enhancements. Music, news, and finance apps, not so much. (Techcrunch11/10)

While other carriers might finally be dipping their toes in the Android water this month, T-Mobile has been in this game for a long time. They got their first Android phone (the G1) out last October, and managed to launch two more (the myTouch and the CLIQ) within the year. It makes sense, then, that they’re the first to pipe up with some usage details. (Mobilecrunch11/4)

If you’re determined to shake down some deals during the mother of all U.S. shopping days, then forgive the cliche when we tell you there’s an app for that. Powered by dealnews, the just-released version 2 of their Black Friday app (iTunes link) adds a number of new features for bargain hunters. (Mashable11/4)

LG Electronics, the world’s third-largest cell phone maker, is eyeing sales gains of 20% this year and in 2010, Skott Ahn, the CEO of its mobile-device business, said. At a separate event Tuesday, LG Electronics CEO Yong Nam said the company was “investing heavily” in smartphones, adding that, “We’re not yet there but we’ll get there.” Nam said LG saw companies such as Apple and Research in Motion, rather than fellow handset makers, as its chief competition. More and more companies are creating iPhone applications as a way to reinforce branding and to gain new customers. Some companies are even seeing increased sales thanks to iPhone apps. Apple is trying to round up programming support to offer a $30-a-month subscription-television service. The Wall Street Journal says Apple’s “over-the-top” service in theory could rival cable television, given it can offer programmers a base of 100 million customers through iTunes. Last week Google launched the Music Onebox — a special new search result that lets users stream songs in their entirety for free. The feature is being powered through partnerships with MySpace and Lala who are providing the song streams, with contributions from a host of other partners like Pandora and imeem. Millions of people will doubtless stumble across the new feature on their own as they run searches for their favorite bands, but Google also has a few tricks up its sleeve to get the word out. We’re hearing that a number of well known artists will soon be actively promoting the service, offering exclusive content to fans who Google them.

Tres smart marketing promotion. Tres Tres smart, The word of mouth on this should be intense. Nice move Google. Very nice. (Techcrunch11/3)
