As a Kindle owner, I love the fact that Amazon released an iPhone app to allow me to continue reading my content even when I don’t have the actual Kindle with me. Of course, the experience of reading on the iPhone’s much smaller and back-lit screen is worse than on the Kindle, but Amazon has made it a bit better with the new update it just rolled out. Microsoft says its new My Phone service for Windows Mobile devices is entering the beta test phase. The service will keep the phone continuously synced with data from the user’s cloud service. “If your phone is lost or stolen, or if you upgrade to a new phone, you can easily restore the contacts, calendar appointments, photos, and other information that you stored on My Phone to a compatible new or replacement phone,” the company said. WeFi, the community-based Wi-Fi network, says it plans to launch an app store for wireless devices this week. The company says the apps will be available on the Symbian S60 mobile phone and will focus on free and paid applications, including video downloads and games. Telephony Online (5/19)

Amazon.com is unveiling a program that pays bloggers for Kindle e-reader subscriptions to their posts. Amazon will pay registered bloggers 30% of its subscription fee. At a $2 per month price point, a blogger could make $50,000 per year with just 7,000 annual subscribers. Very nice.  Thank you Amazon.  Just published Daily Marauder.  The format is a bit wonky but what the hell, still cool none the less.  Love that Amazon even generates a Kindle preview so that you can see what your blog looks like on the device.  FYI, Newspaper companies, speak to Kindle.  They have it.

Amazon revealed its third Kindle today at a jam-packed press conference in New York City. The new Kindle, which Techcrunch first caught wind of last year, is expected to have a larger screen to be used for reading newspapers, magazines, and textbooks. Looking to add to its subscriber base, Vudu will begin offering its collection of movies to Entone, a company that supplies set-top boxes and DVRs to regional TV providers. Vudu’s library includes more than 14,000 movies and TV programs. CED Magazine (5/2009) , xchange (5/5)

Sales of “connected” consumer-electronics products — including TVs, set-top boxes, servers, consoles and Blu-ray players — will reach 100 million units by 2013, according to a new study by Parks Associates. Several top publishing companies are looking to develop electronic reading devices similar to Amazon’s Kindle as a way to get their products out to a wider, tech-savvy audience that has lost interest in traditional print. For example, Hearst Corp., which owns newspapers such as the San Francisco Chronicle and magazines such as Cosmopolitan, is working with a company called FirstPaper to develop a software platform to accept the digital download of newspapers and magazines. Microsoft just announced earnings for its third fiscal quarter. Revenues were down 6 percent to $13.65 billion, and net income was down a whopping 32 percent to $2.98 billion or $0.33 EPS. Analysts consensus was closer to $14 billion for revenues and $0.39 for non-GAAP EPS, which Microsoft met thanks to its cost-cutting measures. Still, this counts as a miss for Microsoft. DVR maker TiVo is ramping up its efforts to thwart the very trend that it created: ad-zapping. The company now is offering advertisers ways to keep their ads static while viewers are fast-forwarding through commercial pods or interactive ads that appear in small text boxes when a show is paused. Sony has demonstrated some of the new capabilities of its BD-Live high-definition format. The advances primarily dealt with being more user-friendly, but Sony home-entertainment chief David Bishop apparently still feels the technology has a ways to go. “I like to say we’re just at the ‘Pong’ stage of BD-Live, if you were to compare it to the video game industry,” he said.
