HYUNDAI GETS DOWN WITH ONLINE VIDEO
October 22, in a parking lot in Ontario, Canada, a 62-year old woman driving a BMW SUV attempts to park. For some unknown reason, she ends up physically mounting her car onto two other cars parked in the lot. At this point, she casually reverses and calmly drives out of the lot without even so much as a , “Sorry I totally f-ked your car” note. Amazing.
What happens next involves a brand very intelligently responding to a bit of popular online video. One of the crushed cars happened to be a Hyundai Elantra. Hyundai responded by buying the owner a new car. They could have done more on the production value of the video but regardless, pretty awesome move for a car company. Just makes you hope that something equally awesome will happen to the other driver.
I still want to know what was happening in that BMW SUV. Cell phone distraction? Partial stroke? What? After witnessing someone drive into a friend’s parked car on the streets of LA, I am amazed at the lengths of driving stupidity. And by the way, the driver who slammed into my friend’s SUV did it with such force that the air bags deployed and he crushed the axel leaving the car un-drivable. Double amazing.

ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA
A battle has been brewing for months now: Google and Facebook both want to be the social layer that sits on top of every site on the Internet. So far, at least in mindshare, Facebook has been winning this battle with Facebook Connect. Google’s offering, Friend Connect is the sibling that gets no respect. But that could change starting today with some new features and functionality. (Techcrunch11/4(

Is the DVD really on its way out? Following a partnership announced earlier this year which made CinemaNow downloads available on Best Buy’s retail site, the electronics chain announced plans to license and deploy Sonic’s Roxio CinemaNow technology and services platform to make on-demand digital content delivery a standard feature on connected consumer electronics devices sold throughout its U.S. stores, including PCs, connected TVs, set top DVRs, Blu-ray Disc and mobile media players. Sonic licenses new movies, TV shows, indie films and catalog titles, often day-in-date with their DVD release. Best Buy will be paying CinemaNow a fee along with a percentage of the service’s revenue for powering the service. CinemaNow also handles the back-end support for Blockbuster’s streaming video rental service. (Cynopsis 11/4)

STAIRS VS. ESCALATOR: THE FUN THEORY IN MOTION
Check out this video from Stockholm encouraging folks to use the staircase rather than the escalator. How? It’s called the fun theory. By turning the staircase into a piano, 66% more people used the stairs rather than the lazy route. Score.
The interesting portion undiscovered until the end of the video is that this is part of a campaign of branded entertainment from VW under the umbrella of the Fun Theory. Over 6 million people have watched the video so far. At least from the perspective of video views, this is clearly a winner. Here’s my question to you, does it have positive effects for the brand?
Check out the other fun theory videos here.
