For those who like renting movies, Hollywood may soon have a message: Prepare to wait. In an effort to push consumers toward buying more movies, some major film studios are considering a new policy that would block DVDs from being offered for rental until several weeks after going on sale. (LA Times 10/23)

This is ridiculous. So now, the thought process is that consumers will simply accept that they can no longer get Netflix movies in the same time frame and go out to buy one instead of renting? Come on. This will force advanced users to the bitorrents to illegally download. There is a difference in strategy between renting and buying. If I don’t want to permanently own something, this coercion won’t change anything. It will really just piss me off. And…prepare for angry comments on Netflix.

The Artist Dashboard interface provides access to charts, graphs, and snapshots of MySpace Music data for all global artists, documenting fan geography, song plays, profile views, friend count, and profile visitors. Yesterday we reported on Nokia’s lawsuit against Apple, in which they claim the iPhone is infringing on 10 of the company’s patents relating to GSM, UMTS and WLAN technologies.Analysts have now had a chance to crunch the numbers and estimate that Apple could face shelling out between $200 million and $1 billion to satisfy the suit if successful — and go on to say that Nokia has a pretty good case. Microsoft announced another down quarter this morning. Revenues in the September quarter were down 14 percent to $12.92 billion, and net profits declined even further to $3.57 billion, or $0.40 a share. The consensus estimate was $0.32, so Wall Street is happy and the shares are rallying (up 10 percent in early-morning trading). (Techcrunch10/23)

GOT LATTE ART? THESE GUYS DO by Marauder

GOT LATTE ART? THESE GUYS DO

A couple of nights ago, after a long digi-action-packed day at Digital Hollywood, I rolled up at my friend Sirin’s house for some yummie dinner. I was shocked and delightfully surprised to find Pro-Pourer Christopher Alameda from Intelligentsia in the house. As a former New Yorker, I expect over-cooked pasta or grilled cheese when invited over for dinner. As we all know, New Yorkers hardly use their stoves. OK…you know I’m talking about the ‘hattan. Anyways, the first thing that threw me for a loop was the rack of lamb simmering away in the oven. The second, was the fact that I knew incredible coffee was to be coming my way post- dinner.

But, let me back up for a second. Over the past year, I have slowly become more and more passionate about my coffee brew experience. It started when I visited Ritual in San Francisco and sought out the Clover machine experience. All I knew about the Clover was was that it was developed by a guy from Ideo, but then again, that’s all I needed to know really.

Later, I also took a visit to Blue Bottle Coffee, also in San Francisco, and checked out the filter drip method of serving coffee.

Back home in NYC, I settled in with some local coffee favorites, including by far my #1, Gimme Coffee in Brooklyn. On any given week day or night, you would have found me computer-deep at Gimme Coffee with latte in hand while I was living in New York (I’ve since moved to LA).   My obsession with Gimme was dual purpose really. I loved their coffee…and I wanted to become the mayor on Foursquare. (All those who claim on 4Square that I cheated in my quest to become mayor can suck it cry babies.)

It is here that I first started paying attention to this concept of latte art. To define it, steamed milk is poured into a shot of espresso to create the resulting design. At first, I thought the foamy shapes on top of my favorite espresso brew were mere flirtations from my barista. That ended when I realized that my barista gave many patrons the frothy foam heart. Traitor… I soon began to rate my barista’s ability to deliver on something impressive from rosettas to things even more impressive. Speaking of which, not to call out my former local shop, but when you half ass it Ninth Street Espresso, I judged. You still make a mean cup of coffee tho.

It’s not until I had a long conversation with Chris and Katie from Intelligentsia in LA, that I realized this coffee latte art was more serious than I had originally considered.

To demonstrate this, there art a number of barista championships around the world from the World Latte Championship to the World Barista Championship.

If you need further convincing on the seriousness of the art or the competition, take a look at a video of Stephen Morrissey, The 2008 World Barista Champion.

So, if you dare, go get your latte art on. But please, don’t try it using that sad little Krups machine you have at home.

Looking to regain its popularity with young boys, Nickelodeon has acquired the rights to the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise from The Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment for $60 million. The Viacom-owned cable network is expected to produce a new version of the show to debut in 2012, while corporate cousin Paramount Pictures will develop a feature film based on the heroes. The CW is granting a full season order to the frosh drama Vampire Diaries, taking the series to a full 22-episode season. Since its debut in September, Vampire Diaries has delivered solid ratings and viewers for the network, averaging a 1.8 rating and 3.9 million total viewers last week. Additionally, The CW gave Melrose Placefive more episodes, despite its lukewarm ratings results since its premiere.

NBC gave a development nod to a 30m sitcom from actor/writer Paul Rust based on his past employment at a Wal-Mart store, cites Variety. The yet-to-be-titled project will be produced by Universal Media Studios through Conan O’Brien‘s Conaco banner. Rust will write and star in the project which recounts his former job at a Wal-Mart located in his hometown of LeMars, Iowa following college graduation.

Does Wal-Mart not see the branded entertainment opportunities alllll over this? Makes me think of the web site I turned to most when driving cross country. http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/

Disney is close to unveiling technology, code-named Keychest, which will allow consumers to pay a single price for permanent access to a movie or television show across multiple platforms and devices — from the Web, to mobile gadgets and cable services. (WSJ 10/21)

There’s a new Google product called “Social Search” that is launching soon in Google Labs. This is a new feature that allows you to see results for queries from people in your social network. This works by using your Google Profile. If you fill it out with the other social networks you’re a member of, such as FriendFeed, Google will scan who you are connected to and give your results from those people. (Techcrunch10/21)

LG Electronics reported a stronger-than-expected quarter thanks to solid business of mobile phones and TV sets, but the world’s third-largest handset maker is eyeing a downbeat fourth quarter because of currency issues, increased marketing costs and pricing pressure. Handset sales in the third quarter reached 31.6 million units, which was up from 29.8 million in the previous three-month period, but profit margins fell from 11% to 8.8% for its phones because of competition and marketing costs.
