Just watched Jeff Zucker (President/CEO) speak during the keynote session of Digital Hollywood commencing this morning in NYC. He referred to the revenue generation of digital distribution as movin’ on up to "digital dimes" from his aforementioned "digital pennies.". That’s progress, yes but he thinks the model will never get to a place where the digital dollars are replacing the traditional revenue streams that are being lost. Scary prognosis.
So based on that, is media less profitable by an large in the future? I don’t think so. I just think the industry hasn’t found the innovation to save itself yet. Save itself sounds more dire than the situation is at this point but no one wants the media industry to fall down the path of the recording industry. At least, I don’t.
