MILES BECKETT FROM EQAL: HARPER’S GLOBE PREMIERE

Earlier today at Digital Hollywood NYC, I had the chance to catch up with Miles Beckett, co-founder and CEO of Eqal.  You may remember Eqal from the online sensation lonelygirl15 or Katemodern fame.  Well, they’re back again, this time in coordination with a new CBS series called Harper’s Island.  Harper’s Globe, the online series, premiered its first episode online today.  Harper’s Island premieres on CBS April 9th.  Watch the first episode of the online series above.

Check out the 2 part interview with Miles below.

Digital Hollywood

Being that I’ve just come from SXSW in Austin, it’s a bit of a culture shock arriving at Digital Hollywood this morning in NYC.  Before I give you the highlights from today, how about I start with a top ten list on the major differences between SXSW and Digi Hollywood?  I tried to make it a mix of pros and cons for both but by and large, my mission here is simple humor.  I’m good for that.

The Top Ten List: SXSW vs. Digital Hollywood

1) Digital Hollywood attendees think ‘monetization’ whereas SXSW attendees think ‘audience size’…by and large.

2) DH peeps rock a suit.  SXSW…more like whatever they rolled out of bed in after a night of binge drinking at Pure Volume.

3) DH: Wine. SXSW: Beer and the more the better.

4) DH: Dell  SXSW: Apple

5) DH: More coat check. Less filler.  SXSW: More stickers.  More graffiti.  More idea generation.  Less shampoo.

6) DH: No Wi-Fi (except in the conference center using some convoluted means to log on)  SXSW: Wi-Fi convention-wide (with small exceptions) AT&T…not so much.

7) DH: Overheard in the bathroom: Nothing.  SXSW: Overheard in the bathroom… Friend1: I just joined twitter this morning. Friend 2: JUST this morning?!? Friend1: Yah. (obvious embarrassment)

8) DH: What’s twitter? SXSW: Holy sh#t! Did you see that last guy’s tweet?! Someone just won SXSW Bingo.

9) DH: Keynote: Jeff Zucker (CEO NBC)  SXSW: Keynote: James Powderly (Co-founder Graffiti Research Lab)

10) DH: The entire traditional media universe peppered with some digi distribution folks.  SXSW: The entire web development community with little to no content creators.

In case you need another visual to drive this one home, have at it…

Digital Hollywood 2009 NYC by Marauder

Just watched Jeff Zucker (President/CEO) speak during the keynote session of Digital Hollywood commencing this morning in NYC. He referred to the revenue generation of digital distribution as movin’on up to "digital dimes" from his aforementioned "digital pennies.". That’s progress, yes but he thinks the model will never get to a place where the digital dollars are replacing the traditional revenue streams that are being lost. Scary prognosis.

So based on that, is media less profitable by an large in the future? I don’t think so. I just think the industry hasn’t found the innovation to save itself yet. Save itself sounds more dire than the situation is at this point but no one wants the media industry to fall down the path of the recording industry. At least, I don’t.

Digital-music retailers such as Amazon MP3 are selling full albums — even popular downloads — for as little as 99 cents. “It is the schoolyard crack-dealer approach,” a metrics expert said. “We will essentially give it away in order to get you to try it because we think you’re going to get hooked, and we think you’re going to come back.” The Boston Globe (3/18)

Taiwan phone maker HTC will introduce at least three additional phones powered by Google‘s Android open-source platform this year, having debuted last month its new HTC Magic for Vodafone to use in Europe, CEO Peter Chou said Tuesday. Chou also predicted that the firm’s Chinese sales will double this year, thanks to a newly built 3G network, and he reaffirmed earlier guidance of double-digit overall revenue growth for HTC. Before this year’s SXSW event kicked off, a number of bloggers suggested that this year’s breakout hit might be foursquare, a new location-based social application with a gaming twist that was created by the guys behind the now-defunct Dodgeball service. As the ‘interactive’ section of the festival winds down, I think it’s safe to say that foursquare was not the must-have app of SXSW the way Twitter was two years ago. But it had a strong showing, and once I actually figured out which of my friends were using the service (which is more difficult than it sounds), I found foursquare to be an indispensable app during my time here. (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/03/18/sxsw-foursquare-scores-despite-its-flaws/ 3/18)

Full disclosure: One of my friends is one of the developers of Foursquare.  That said, I’m still pretty objective.  Foursquare is like the application loopt but better.  Loopt is great if you frequently open the app but usually I don’t have reason to.  Foursquare gives users incentives to open the app by awarding badges for completing certain tasks.  My gripe with the application is mainly in the way that friends are added as the application requests a phone number or twitter handle rather than plugging into the iPhone contact list.  I don’t know about you but I don’t remember anyone’s phone numbers.  Plus, not all of my friends are super tech savvy so I can really only see my nerd fabulous friend’s whereabouts.  It will take a bit of critical mass but this app’s future is bright.
