Nickelodeon will premiere the computer-generated series “The Penguins of Madagascar” on March 28. The series, based on the movie “Madagascar” from DreamWorks, will debut at 8 p.m. for a couple of weeks before settling into its regular time slot of Saturday mornings at 10 on April 18. Comedy Central has secured the rights to televise comedian Dane Cook‘s latest stand-up special, “Isolated Incident.” The Viacom network will premiere the special May 17 at 10 p.m., release a related CD two days later and then follow that up in the summer or fall with a DVD. Variety (3/11)

BET’s second season premiere of its gospel competition series Sunday Best last Sunday at 9p, delivered a 1.3 coverage rating and attracted 1.7 million total viewers. CBS ordered four new scripts of its Monday night comedy How I Met Your Mother, per TVWeek. The early order is for the 2009-2010 season, allowing producers time to plan the show’s fifth season. FOX picked up the new 13-episode medical/mystery drama Mental from Fox Television Studios. The 60m series, slated to premiere this summer, is produced in association with Fox International Channels (FIC) and was shot at Fox TeleColobia last year in Bogota, Colombia. The series stars Chris Vance (Prison Break) as Dr. Jack Gallagher, a young psychiatrist who becomes Director of Mental Health Services at a Los Angeles hospital and subsequently butts heads with his new conservative boss and former lover, hospital administrator, Nora Skoff played by Annabella Sciorra (The Sopranos). NBC is rolling out a new reality competition series that embraces the family road trip, reports THR. Great American Road Trip, produced by BBC Worldwide, will focus on seven families as they drive cross-country to iconic tourist destinations like the Grand Canyon and at the same time watches as they compete in various elimination challenges. Viewers will get a free preview of CBS College Sports Network starting this Friday through April 7, cites Multichannel News. The network, with 30 million subscribers currently, will be available during the preview to an additional 20 million subscribers. During the preview window, viewers can take in coverage of Men’s Division 1 college basketball tournament including two first-round out-of-market games and the tournament’s official highlights show, NCAA March Madness Highlights powered by Pontiac. Some of the affiliates participating in the preview are Dish Network, Charter and Comcast in Seattle and San Francisco as well as Time Warner Cable in New York City, Los Angeles and Texas. Ashley Jensen, seen recently on ABC’s Ugly Betty, was tapped for CBS‘ pilot Accidentally on Purpose, per THR. Jensen will play best friend to Jenna Elfman’s character, a movie critic who gets pregnant after a one-night stand with a younger man. (Cynopsis 3/12)

According to a study by Rider Research, the US pay-TV market is doing well as the number of pay-TV subscribers increased by 362,000 during fourth quarter 2008. The report bases its findings on data found in quarterly financial reports from phone, cable and satellite TV companies. The three companies that did the best were Verizon with 303,000 new subs, followed closely by DirecTV with 301,000 and AT&T with 264,000. Losses for fourth quarter were also reported from Comcast at -233,000 subs, Time Warner Cable at -197,000 and Dish Network at -102,000. (Cynopsis 3/12)

Comcast has used an array of aggressive pricing, innovative features and “triple-play” packaging to become the third-largest domestic phone company, the firm said. Cablevision, the cable provider with the highest penetration of digital service in the country among the major cable players, has announced that it will stop offering customers analog TV service by the end of the year. Cablevision, which already has gone all-digital in parts of New York, said just 5% of its 3.1 million video subscribers currently were on the analog expanded-basic tier. Comedy Central‘s digital properties benefited greatly this week from Jon Stewart‘s 8+ minute rant against CNBC after network reporter Rick Santelli “bailed out” on his scheduled appearance on The Daily Show. (Jon took issue with some of Jim Cramer‘s infamous stock misses, among other things.) Traffic to TheDailyShow.com had its best week ever with a 65% spike in weekly uniques, total video streams for comedy central video were 18% higher than average and embedded video views increased more than 3 times from the first week of March. Movie trailers continue to drive huge web traffic. The new trailer for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, featured on Heroes on Monday night, had more than 1.8 million downloads during its first 24 hours as an exclusive on Apple.com. CBS Corp. said it expects a 30% increase in revenue from online advertising for March Madness On Demand this year, per Bloomberg. Online ad revenue will be about $30 million, up from $23 million a year ago, as internet ad inventory is almost sold out according to Jason Kint, SVP/GM for CBSSports.com. Google is eyeing telephony with its introduction of Google Voice, a free IP-based management tool that routes home, office and mobile calls through a single number, retrieves voice mail and allows users to make free domestic calls, according to published reports. Much is being written today about the value of a large following on Twitter. Jason Calacanis wants to pay $125,000 a year to have Twitter recommend him to other users, for example. He thinks that over time accounts with massive followings will somehow be able to pull in $1 million a year or more in incremental revenue, assuming they then have millions of followers. Today Facebook is rolling out the update to user homepages that brings a new look, enhanced filter system, and most importantly, realtime updating. Real-time updates are Facebook’s response to Twitter, which has been able to thrive on offering users immediate updates from their friends and favorite celebrities (Facebook’s original News Feed took hours to update). Over the last few weeks MySpace Music has quietly rolled out a number of new features that should make the service significantly more appealing to consumers. While MySpace Music kicked off to an fairly impressive start when it launched last September, seeing a huge amount of traffic and streamed songs, even its President Courtney Holt has conceded that it wasn’t very user-friendly and didn’t bring many new features to the table. The initial launch of MySpace Music was mostly about laying the groundwork to build a sustainable business. Now, the site is shifting focus to deliver what its consumers want. Widgets integrated into Verizon’s FiOS service in the U.S. will allow viewers to update their Facebook status to reflect what they’re watching and check out Twitter feeds keyed to programming as well as popular Twitter topics. At least one of eBay‘s big acquisitions is making money. At its annual investors conference the online auction house says its PayPal online payment business continues to grow at an impressive clip and that the division will eventually become bigger than its core auction product. Take-Two Interactive saw a 25% uptick in sales during its fiscal first quarter, fueled by the popularity of its “Grand Theft Auto IV” title. Despite the sales increase, the company reported a wider loss during the quarter, but it is calling the quarter a “low point” for the full fiscal year. Nintendo’s DS handheld has broken a sales record after reaching 100 million units sold in 4 years and 3 months’ time. Online gaming via consoles and portable devices is growing fast accounting for 25% of all videogame activity so far this year – up from 19% in 2008, according to the NPD Group. Microsoft‘s Xbox 360 enjoys a 50% market share of online console games, followed by Nintendo’s Wii with 29%. Teens ages 13 to 17 are the fastest growing online gaming demo, increasing from 17% of the market in 2008 to 22% in 2009. MIT researchers have developed a lithium-ion battery that can recharge cell phones, notebook computers and other electronics equipment much more quickly than at present, according to the scientists, who said the development would also lead to smaller and lighter hardware. “If you can charge your phone in 30 seconds, that becomes a life changer,” said MIT professor Gerbrand Ceder, who led the research team.
