And here’s the original.  Original Facebook profile pic that is.  Brooklyn artist Matt Held has been painting Facebook profile pics with the objective of collecting paintings that mirror individual self-portraits.  These paintings are a statement on how we choose to represent ourselves in public and I think a really interesting one.

Social networking sites have given us the ability to create a virtual representation of ourselves filled with our favorite bands, books, and friends.  The most visual representation of this re-creation lies in the profile picture which is carried throughout every conversation on every profile page throughout the social networking universe (i.e. the most important visual in many respects).

This one is my favorite.  Click on the image above to see more of Matt’s work on his web site.

To get your own Matt Held original, sign up for the Facebook group and cross your fingers.  Matt wants to paint 200 portraits when he finishes with this project and over 500 people have already joined his Facebook group.

He has no plans to exhibit his work just yet but will be speaking at the Brooklyn Museum of Art Saturday March 7th about the project if you’re in the NYC area.  He will also be selling these so if you’re interested in purchasing one, contact Matt on his web site.

STARBUCKS SENDS ME SOME ENERGY: DOUBLESHOT + A USB COOLER

Starbucks (thanks Elavia) sent me a care package this week with the essential ingredients for good blog-making: caffeinated beverages and a USB cooler as powered by my computer.  Coming to grocery and convenience stores this month, you’ll find the Starbucks Doubleshot drinks.

They come in 4 flavors including vanilla, coffee, mocha, and cinnamon dulce.  I sit sipping the new flavor, cinnamon dulce as we speak.  It tastes like a cinnamon bun mixed with a little milk.  Not exactly my drink of choice but for you sweet drink junkies out there, this is for you.  I mean, I’m the girl who drinks her coffee black with no sugar.  I’m also a little intimidated by the size of the can.  Think of the extra large version of the Red Bull can and you’ve arrived at the size of this product.  Who drinks this much beverage all at once?  Luckily, my clumsiness kicked in and I spilled my can all over my desk.

My intrigue over this particular care package really comes from the USB cooler/warmer.  Plug this device into your computer via USB to keep any beverage warm or cool.  There’s a separate switch on the back for either.  I like to let my beverage linger on my desk over several hours.  Now, at least I can keep it at relatively the right temperature.  Ingenius.  Click here for one of your very own.

Cash-rich InterActiveCorp chief Barry Diller is said to be hunting for a “transformational” acquisition. Analysts say they wouldn’t be surprised if Diller’s next deal is “on the scale of a YouTube.” Diller is reportedly on the lookout for a Chinese version of the Huffington Post. Despite a strong performance by Scripps Networks Interactive’s cable TV channels, the company reported a net loss of $154 million in the fourth quarter. The Lifestyle Media segment of SNI, which includes channels such as HGTV and Food Network, turned in fourth-quarter profit of $176 million on revenue of $340.3 million, which was up 7% year-over-year. Psychologists and pop-culture experts such as “Dr. Phil” McGraw say that shows like “Dexter,” “Weeds” and “30 Rock” reflect contemporary society and allow people to safely vent their frustrations. “It’s a safe outlet for them to live vicariously. They don’t have to do anything bad,” McGraw said. “They don’t have to sacrifice their morality. They can sit on their couches and quietly urge this guy on.” Variety (2/5)
