The wait for the new Kindle may be much shorter than initially expected. Amazon is hosting a press event on Feb. 9 at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, apparently to unveil the second generation eBook reader. Amazon’s first Kindle been sold out since before the holidays but the Amazon site has revised the suggested wait time for one from 11-13 weeks to 4-6 weeks. (Cynopsis 1/28)

Chris Hutchins, a former management and business strategy consultant who was laid off in early December, is looking to make the best of his predicament and a generally weak economy.
Realizing that he’s just one of many being laid off (more than 224,000 employees have been ejected from the tech sector since August), Hutchins decided to launch LaidOffCamp San Francisco, a “bar camp” style event that he hopes will be a self-organized networking resource, start-up incubator, and group coping session for the recently unemployed in the Bay Area. Illegal versions of Apple’s iWork 09 productivity software and Adobe’s Photoshop CS4 For Mac apparently contained “Trojan Horse” viruses that allow a remote user to take over the affected computers. The iWork Trojan, which about 20,000 people unwittingly downloaded off the Internet, was discovered last Wednesday, and the Photoshop bug, downloaded by about 5,000, was found Sunday. The online HP Parts Store reportedly is offering a six-cell, lithium-polymer battery that is compatible with the HP Mini 1000 netbook, which comes standard with a three-cell power source. The higher capacity battery costs about $155 and is rated at 2.4Ah and 53Wh. Electronista (1/27)
