APPLE’S STEVE JOBS TAKES LEAVE UNTIL JUNE

Apple Inc.‘s CEO Steve Jobs says he is taking a medical leave of absence until the end of June.  Jobs told employees in an e-mail that his health issues are more complex than he thought. (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i7Moc4v8CqZwrNTz2EkmqkSiNaeQD95N5QF04 1/14)

There goes Apple’s stock price. But seriously, I hope Jobs will be OK.

INAUGURATION 2.0: OBAMA KICKS IT NEW SCHOOL

change-obama

So in true Obama interweb style, the inaugural events have been promoted with the kind of digital fervor this little blogstress looks forward to. And if you want Shepard Fairey’s newest limited edition Obama poster (above), click on the image for a link to the site. Buy it there for $20 which is a whole lot less than the $100 on other sites.

And now, I bring you Obamania 2.0:

Online

inaugural-ball

Can’t get tickets to the ball? Can’t get a flight to DC for less than $1000? (I just did a search on Orbitz from LA to DC and couldn’t find anything less than $1,200) Watch the ball online for the first time in presidential history. I love these first time presidential digital moments. If I had a child, this could be as exciting as witnessing the first steps.

On top of watching the ball live, you can watch the inauguration itself on the 20th in several places:

inauguration-cnn-facebook

  • CNN.com & Facebook (above) à So far, this is the most comprehensive online offering I’ve found. Coverage begins at 8AM EST and continues through the swearing-in ceremony at 12PM EST
  • CBSnews.com & Cnet.com

And finally, HBO is bringing you on-air and online access to the pre-inauguration concert on Sunday.  Viewers can watch online live at 2:30 or at 7.  Or watch on air for the full screen experience.

Mobile

Get continuous mobile updates on your cell.

Or…

Watch the inauguration via iPhone with uStream’s upcoming launching application to be live 1/20 in time for the inauguration itself.

ustream

Or…

Download the Point About Inauguration iPhone app to stay on top of events in the DC area if you’re making the trip.  This location-based app gives you some generic features like a countdown to the inauguration and your distance from the steps of the inauguration.  But more useful will be metro and parking garage locations, Wi-fi hot spots, and Zagat guide.  For the out-of-towner like me, it’s my in-the-know-DC-best-friend in my pocket.

point

In Theatres

theatres-obama

MSNBC will be bringing inaugural Obamania to a big screen near you. 27 theatres around the country will be providing MNBC’s new coverage on the big screen from 11a – 3:30 ET capturing the inauguration and the parade. Free tickets are available here.

Coffee Shops (seriously…)

obama-bucks

On top of broadcasting to movie theatres, MSNBC will be simulcasting to 650 Starbucks’ in New York, San Francisco and Seattle. Inauguration with your tall non-fat latte? No problem.

Obamania 2.0 = Democracy

Or at least a better version of it than the one we’re used to. If democracy is rule by an entire people, then empowering those people with information to this degree with push us that much closer. This much passion in our government not only instills pride but pushes all of us to move in a better direction. I can’t wait for those Freakanomic guys to some day write about the economic effect.

We at Daily Marauder will be in DC next week for the inauguration. It’s nice to know that all of you will be with us.

BROADCAST/CABLE

“American Idol,” the most-watched show on U.S. television, drew a 10% lower rating than last year in the opening of its eighth season on News Corp.’s Fox, according to initial ratings. The talent contest won its time slot with a 16.7 rating over two hours Tuesday night. (Iwantmedia 1/14, http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=agshJR9rQJG4 1/14)

Late-night king Jay Leno may be turning from a winner to an also-ran for NBC. Ad buyers won’t spend as much on his new show in the 10 p.m. time slot as on his ABC and CBS competitors, says Andy Donchin, director of TV ad buying at Carat USA. “Leno won’t win the time period.” (Iwantmedia 1/14, http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aejIqNWbUuZA 1/14)

The 90-minute season finale of VH1′s “Real Chance of Love” attracted a robust 4.2 million viewers and put up a 2.3 ratings in the advertiser-friendly 18-to-49 demo. The performance was good enough to make the show the most-watched nonsports program of the evening. Broadcasting & Cable (1/13)

Who are these people that watch this show?  Now, I’m known to watch other soul-less reality series like The Hills and The City but here is where I draw the line of dribble….

The first full week of the new year shows USA Network delivered six of the top 10 most-watched shows on ad-supported cable. According to Nielsen data for the week ended Jan. 11, USA averaged 3.09 million prime-time viewers and was No. 1 in the 18-to-49 and 25-to-54 age demographics. Mediaweek (1/13)

BBC America heats things up next month as a new drama/thriller series Mistresses makes its U.S. debut on February 20 at 8p. The plot centers on four thirtysomething college friends, played by British actresses Sarah Parish, Sharon Small, Orla Brady and Shelley Conn, who all have experienced infidelity and love. Following the premiere, episodes will air Fridays at 9p. (Cynopsis 1/14)

You know how you can tell this isn’t an American series?  3 out of 4 of these actresses are brunettes.

MTV Network’s Logo unveiled a new documentary film series focusing on people, issues and places important to the LGBT community. The films, profiling such notables as Keith Haring and David LaChapelle, will air simultaneously on Saturday nights beginning Jan. 17 at 8 pm ET/PT on Logo and mtvU and be available online at Logoonline.com. (Cynopsis 1/14)

(Below) And to the current head of the FCC, Kevin Martin, I’ll burn a candle in your honor…and then step on it.  Given Genachowski’s (try saying that once out loud) position on investment in broadband access to the public, I think we’ll all get along just fine.

President-elect Barack Obama intends to nominate his technology advisor Julius Genachowski to take over as chairman of the FCC, according to reports. A former classmate of Obama’s at Harvard Law School, Genachowski helped shape the President-elect’s detailed technology platform which includes ardent support for net neutrality principles and investment in communications infrastructure to help bring affordable broadband access to all communities in the U.S. (Cynopsis 1/14)

Sony Pictures Television has acquired Michael Davies’Embassy Row production company, a move that brings Davies, whose production deal with Sony just expired, in-house at SPT on a full-time basis. “Michael is an incredibly savvy producer,” SPT President Steve Mosko said. “He has a unique understanding of the formats and how to make these shows work in network, cable and syndication.” The Hollywood Reporter (1/14) , TVWeek.com (1/13)

Comedy Central officially launched in HD on Cablevision Systems yesterday with close to 200 hours of programming in native high definition. Mainstays The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report will initially be upconverted from standard def but will shift to native HDTV in the near future. (Cynopsis 1/14)

Blockbuster today is expected to announce that it will serve up its inventory of films and TV shows via a wide array of digital platforms, including the Internet, mobile phones, Web-connected TVs and Blu-ray players. “We want it to be ubiquitous,” said Kevin Lewis, senior vice president of digital entertainment for Blockbuster, which is in a competitive battle with Netflix. The Golden Globes telecast may have taken it on the chin on Sunday night (recording its second-worst ratings since ’95) but at least one online venue saw an increase in eyeballs. AOL‘s Moviefone.com site notched 81 million page views on Monday, with close to 67 million views coming directly from the site’s Golden Globe’s hub, according to internal Omniture numbers. It might be too late for Time Warner to sell its battered AOL unit, analysts say. “I just don’t see bidders out there.” Time Warner is still looking at whether AOL has the “right ownership structure,” says CFO John Martin. Also, the company is “reviewing” some of its smaller magazines. (Iwantmedia 1/14, http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=asCgPLoBQD7g 1/14)

Google launched Gmail only four years ago, and it is now the fourth most popular e-mail service on the Web after Yahoo Mail, AOL Mail, and Windows Live Hotmail. (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/01/14/gmail-grew-43-percent-last-year-aol-mail-and-hotmail-need-to-start-worrying 1/14)

Today Google added a new feature to its extremely useful Maps service, allowing users to quickly view the layout of public transportation systems in more than 50 cities. While Google’s Transit site has offered automatic trip-planning for a number of areas for some time, the new feature makes it easy to determine at a glance if public transportation is even a viable option. As someone who has been using Hopstop for quick some time, it’s a neat feature but one that I have been used to using elsewhere.  That said, my iPhone always appreciates added features packed into its lovely little Google map.

MTV.com earlier this week launched “MTV Detox,” an online series about one of the portal’s best-known topics: itself. The Sunday-through-Thursday series, which also is available for mobile streaming, is composed of clips from MTV shows such as “The Real World: Brooklyn” and “The City.” Mediaweek (1/13)

I don’t quite understand the need for yet another series which pokes fun at on-air reality shows.  I mean, this one only covers what happens on one MTV series per night.  Give me some InfoMania with a side of Talk Soup and I’m happy.  I don’t need the MTV-specific version.  I don’t have quite that much MTV love to give…

The growing increase in the quality of cameraphones will likely result in an explosion of imaging applications for wireless devices, according to a new report from Parks Associates, a research and consulting firm. The study predicted revenue from the new opportunities should reach $500 million by 2013. InformationWeek (1/13) , cellular-news (U.K.) (1/13)

In a demonstration of why President-elect Barack Obama will probably have to surrender his BlackBerry, owner Research in Motion on Monday issued a pair of interim patches to cover up critical security holes in the handset’s software. In an advisory, RIM listed four service packs from its Enterprise Server and Professional Software systems that were affected and warned users to open PDF documents only from trusted senders.
