DROP IT LIKE ITS HOT: THE PALM PRE

palm-pre4

On Friday, a day after Palm presented their newest smart phone dubbed the Palm Pre to the press, I got a hands-on demo of the device.  Initially, when I heard all of the noise surrounding the newest Palm, I didn’t quite understand the draw.  Touch screen, beautiful screen, proprietary operating system, blah blah blah

But then, I saw it in action.

As a proud card carrying member of the iPhone club, I pride myself on being ahead of the curve in mobile device land.  Well, this little gleaming slickster, might give me a bit of competition with the Palm users.

Here’s the dilly.

Design

palm-pre2

  • It’s curvy like Kim Kardashian. As you can see from the picture above, the device slides open to produce a curved interface. Not only does this orientation reduce glare, it actually fits the contours of your face more importantly.  Sweet.
  • 3.1” touch screen which is just a smidge smaller than the 3.5” Apple screen.
  • 1 button on the outside of the device which acts as the home button

Usability

  • Sports its own proprietary operating system with lovable little title webOS.  Who names these things?  The operating system empowers the interesting features below.
  • The device works off of gestures taking the touch screen usability of the iPhone to the next level.  Slide your finger across the bottom of the screen to go back to the previous screen.  Slide your finger up to produce the navigation bar.  Yah, you really need to see it to understand.  Check out the video above.

contacts

  • (Image above) Contact and calendar synchronization: The Palm Pre collects information from Facebook, Google and Exchange combining information from multiple sources in one contact.  Your client changes his contact number in Facebook?  Your Palm Pre automatically updates that for you.  Hotness.

browser

  • (Image above) The browser brings up web pages in the computer-ready way you’re used to.
  • The iPhone accelerometer is pretty damn sensitive.  This one is a little less so meaning that it won’t switch as much orientations as much when you’re not ready for it.
  • If you’ve used an iPhone, you know that notifications such as an SMS message demand attention upon reception.  It’s like when your two-year old demands your attention while you’re on the phone.  You must either reply or close immediately.  The Palm Pre, in comparison, brings up a notification on the bottom half of the screen.  Swipe the notification away and the alert will still be posted within your text messages showing that you need to deal with it later.

messaging

  • (Image Above) The messaging applications combines text messaging and instant chat conversations with one contact in one screen aggregating the convo from multiple angles.  Brilliant.
  • Users can buy DRM-free songs on the device through the Amazon store.
  • The phone charges via phone dock.  Just place the phone on the dock and instant charge.  No wires.  Ahhhhh.

My only con so far is the lack of video camera…but then again, with an iPhone, I’m used to going without there. In essence, this device is about simplifying your messy life, not adding more nice-to-have features.

BROADCAST/CABLE by Marauder

BROADCAST/CABLE

HBO‘s seven-part miniseries “John Adams” as well as ongoing series “In Treatment” and “True Blood” were big winners during Sunday evening’s Golden Globes competition. The documentary on the second U.S. president received recognition for its two lead characters, Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney as John and Abigail Adams, while Tom Wilkinson’s turn as Benjamin Franklin won an award for best supporting actor. I couldn’t be a bigger fan of John Adams.  If you haven’t seen it, the multiple hours you’ll put into watching it are surely worth it.  Favorite moment from last night?  Slumdog Millionaire wining in the film category.  That movie is candy land for the soul.

ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA by Marauder

ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA

AOL’s programming sites (Money & Finance, News, Sports, Health, Food, Music, Games, and Moviefone, among others) have been on a tear for the last year and a half and now attract 70 million monthly visitors, says AOL. Page views have grown 40% year over year. The NYTimes reports that the group controls 75 sites and will add 30 more this year. Many of these sites, as we’ve previously reported, have little or no AOL branding at all. (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/01/12/aol-continues-to-splinter-content-into-anti-portals 1/12)

Can’t get enough speechifying from politicians on C-SPAN? Now you can catch them on YouTube. Many elected representatives in Congress already have their own YouTube channels, but YouTube has just launched two central hubs to make it easier to find videos from your Senator or Congressman. (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/01/12/is-your-senator-on-youtube 1/12)

Holy crap. Sen Schumer (NY state) even has his own YT channel. Thank you Techcrunch. Now I finally have something to do on a Friday night…

We’re going to be seeing a lot more touchscreen computers. One of the features of Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system is that it supports a multitouch user-interface (much like on the iPhone or a Tablet PC). To further the adoption of such touchscreen technology, Microsoft led a $24 million round in Israeli startup N-trig. (Below) I got the chance to demo the HD 3D home theatre system last week and was fully blown away.  I wasn’t so much a fan of the animation films in the format but sports of any kind comes alive in HD 3 dimensionally.  You really need to see this one…

Panasonic introduced at CES its 3D Full HD Plasma Home Theater System, which is said to be the first-of-its-kind setup that depicts 3-D imagery that the company says is fully true to life. The system involves a 103-inch plasma HDTV from Panasonic and a Panasonic Blu-ray player that, together, deliver full HD images to the left and right eyes. Pocket-lint.co.uk (1/9)

With an eye toward the youth market, AT&T and Dell are selling an Inspiron Mini 9 laptop for $100 until Jan. 31 — including the $350 rebate — a Windows XP device embedded with connectivity to AT&T’s 3G network. Buyers must commit to a two-year service contract that costs $60 a month. RCR Wireless News (1/9)

(Below) I got to check out Eye-Fi at CES.  Anything that makes it easier to transfer pictures from my camera to my computer is a very good thing.  And with the iPhone application they also demoed at CES, they’re taking it to the next level.  Too bad the only people able to have the iPhone app are those who own the Eye-Fi card. Blah….

For the second year in a row, Eye-Fi claimed the prize in the ninth annual Last Gadget Standing SuperSession sponsored by NetShelter, as determined by the crowd’s reception on Saturday. This year Eye-Fi demoed the new Eye-Fi Video Card, which allows users to wirelessly upload videos and share videos in real time, over the internet. The emWave Personal Stress Reliever, a portable biofeedback tool from HeartMath that helps users “reduce stress, balance emotions and increase performance,” won in an online vote at the Last Gadget Standing site.
