WIRELESS

At a press announcement today at CES, Palm announced a brand spankin’ new handset: the Palm Pre. Running the much-gossiped new Palm WebOS (Not known as “Nova” afterall) and sporting a QWERTY slide-out keyboard below a 3.1″ touchscreen, this might just be enough to get Palm out of their slump. At CES, Microsoft has introduced its second iPhone app after dipping its toe with the release of Seadragon Mobile last month. The name of the application is Microsoft Tag, and it enables users to instantly access mobile content, videos, music, contact information, maps, social networks, promotions, etc. simply by pointing the device’s camera to a custom tag. Saw a demo of this at the Microsoft booth today.  The camera has trouble reading the codes when there are shadows in the photo but otherwise, I think this is an even better solution than the QR codes.  QR codes are barcode like in black and white.  Microsoft tags are colorful and stand out, inviting users to use them.

GAMING

The soon-to-launch Disney XD brand, which comprises a cable channel and a companion Web site that includes a social network and games, is aimed at the elusive viewing audience of boys ages 6 to 14. The channel is a rebranded version of Toon Disney; programming is expanding to include live-action shows, original movies, music and sports from sister-channel ESPN. Rich Ross, president of Disney Channels Worldwide, said, “We looked at the landscape and feel that girls are being served — if not superserved — and preschoolers are also well-served, but boys really haven’t been.” The Wall Street Journal (1/8)

TECHNOLOGY

(Below) Didn’t quite make it to the BCS Game tonight unfortunately.  CES can get a hold of you and spin you in 3,000 directions pretty easily.  That said, I dropped by the Sony booth earlier in the day and watched video in 3D HD in the theatre.  Mind blowing really.  I saw video from the Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony in 3D HD.  The only way that could get any better is if they installed a scratch and stiff panel on the side and I could smell the environment as well as see it in 3D.  Amazing stuff.  3D seems best suited for the sports environment.  The animated films left me feeling a bit queasy but the basketball, football, and soccer were unbelievable.

3-D technology continues to find new ways to win the hearts and minds of America. College football fans can watch tonight’s BCS Championship Game between Florida and Oklahoma at one of 80 Cinedigm cinema screens. The event, the first national live sporting event delivered to audiences in 3D at multiple locations, will be shot by a 3ality camera crew using Sony cameras with Fox Sports providing play-by-play and color commentating. Tickets are going for between $18-$22 and they’re going fast. Check out Cinedigm’s CineLive site for theater locations. (Cynopsis 1/8)

Toshiba announced at CES that its new Regza LCD television sets will come equipped with Dolby Volume, the licensed system that aims to eliminate loudness spikes during commercial breaks and when viewers switch from one channel to another. The high-end Regza also comes with Toshiba’s Resolution Plus video upconversion technology as well as a USB port to view digital media. Broadcasting & Cable (1/7)

Sony unveiled at CES new additions to its Bravia TV line that will hit store shelves this year: the 52-inch KDL-52VE5, the 46-inch KDL-46VE5 and the 40-inch KDL-40VE5. Each model has a number of energy-conservation systems built in, including a zero-watt standby power switch and the company’s Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp, which Sony said could decrease power consumption about 40%. The company also is offering the XBR9 and Z-series lines featuring an Ethernet connection. ElectronicHouse.com (1/7)

Today during an Industry Insider Series keynote at CES in Las Vegas, AMD CEO Dirk Meyer and OTOY CEO Jules Urbach announced that AMD has been working on what it’s calling the world’s “fastest supercomputer ever”, designed “to break the one petaFLOPS barrier and to process a million compute threads across more than 1000 graphics processors”. Netflix announced that its Watch Instantly streaming video service will also be integrated with the price sensitive Vizio line of HDTVs, without the need of a separate set-top. (Cynopsis 1/8)

MICROSOFT CES KEYNOTE: BALLMER’S COMING OUT PARTY by Marauder

MICROSOFT CES KEYNOTE: BALLMER’S COMING OUT PARTY

Steve Baller: CEO Microsoft

The big news from the keynote last night was the launch of Microsoft 7 for registered beta Microsoft beta users and January 9th for everyone else.  Here’s a quick recap of the highlights…no shockers here.

  • Windows live search will come pre-installed in all Dell computers as of February.
  • Windows live essential is no longer in beta and now comes a bit more synchronized with Facebook allowing users to automatically post photos on Microsoft Live from posting on Facebook.  That’s nice.
  • Microsoft live will also be implemented on all Verizon feature phones.
  • Release of a windows mobile app to allow management of the Netflix queue

Everything else was a bit of old news.  No expected mention of the Zune.  No real excitement here.

An Australian musical comedy group called Tripod performed to poke light at the gaming lifestyle…sounding strikingly like the Flight of the Conchords, a New Zealand music improve group on HBO currently in season 2.  They should have some falsetto wars.  One performed last year during the Comcast keynote.  The other performed this year during the Microsoft keynote.  Flight would kill it in a deathmatch…

Robbie Bach then took the stage to note how men really are from Mars, women from Venus…somehow ignoring the building female gamer market.  Hey Bach, ever heard of the Wii or Guitar Hero on your own gaming console platform?  Guess not.
