CES UNVEILED 2009: HOW TO MAKE OLD NEW AGAIN

Last night, I ventured out in a see of press to discover some cool gadgetry.  I came out of the experience feeling like something was missing. . .a hole in my aching heart if you will.  Where is the Blu-Ray crushing defeat of HD DVD?  Where is the mind-blowing heart-pounding game-changing technology?  The answer.  The Adult Entertainment Expo down the hall.  We’ll be covering that later in the week.  For now, here’s the best of show for CES Unveiled 2009.

Sign Language in the Palm of Your Hand…Ironic No?

Type in a word and the translator shows you the sign for it.  Check out the video below as I ask if it can help me get a date or yell at people.

Equal Opportunity Charger

Step 1: Slide this cover with PowerMat technology on your phone (pictured is an iPhone).

Step 2: Place your phone on the above Powermat.  Charge and repeat.  No need for multiple chargers.  No need for all out panic when you remember you left your BlackBerry charger at home.

The Pacemaker Your Heart Can’t Use

Portable DJ system in the palm of your hand.  Mix, play, and record music your way.  As a former DJ, I’m always a little skeptical of new devices which give non-DJs the ability to play instant pseudo-turntablist.  Overnight art form killer.  But in demoing the device, the ability for manual mixing is endless and the cost sans turntables, mixer, and/or laptop, is quite affordable.

The device has a capacity of 60GB and comes with an app for both Windows and Mac that lets you manage the music on the device.  As a DJ, the job can get a bit lonely.  For the most part, you’re segregated in a booth kept away from the dancing masses below.  Pacemaker allows you to line out to a wireless transmitter so in essence, the DJ could be spinning from the dance floor.  If the job of the DJ is to read the crowd as effectively as possible, nothing helps like being in the middle of it.

Due in the spring for $550.

BROADCAST/CABLE by Marauder

BROADCAST/CABLE

During NBC’s Super Bowl XLIII broadcast on February 1, viewers will need 3-D glasses to view a 90-second commercial promoting the March release of animated movie Monsters vs. Aliens from DreamWorks Animation. DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said the 90-second commercial plus giving away 150 million pairs of 3-D glasses through 28,000 retail locations via the Pepsi/SoBe Life displays will cost “tens of millions of dollars” and he calls the deal “perhaps the biggest media-advertising event in history.” A single 30-second ad in the Super Bowl is tabbed at approximately $3 million. Is it wrong that I want to rubber band the glasses to my mom’s dog and see what happens?  All in good fun…

NBC News is denying a Drudge Report story claiming that conservative author Ann Coulter has been banned from the network after “Today” dropped her from Tuesday’s program because of breaking-news events. “We look forward to welcoming her back in the future,” says NBC. As more cable channels produce must-see programs, a top-rated cable outlet could come to reach as many viewers as one of the broadcast networks, according to industry analysts. ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA by Marauder

ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA

Nearly two years ago, Steve Jobs published an open letter to the music industry calling for the death of DRM (digital rights management). He convinced EMI to ditch DRM back in April, 2007, but the three other major music labels held out. Until today. Now all the songs on iTunes are DRM-free, or soon will be. WIRELESS

Sling Media, the company behind the popular (and very cool) settop boxes that allow you to stream cable from your house to your computer, looks like it has outdone itself. At this week’s Macworld the company will be showing off its upcoming iPhone application, which effectively gives iPhone owners instant access to their Cable TVs and Tivos from anywhere they have a network connection. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a little longer (the company says that the app will be submitted to Apple some time in Q1), but it looks like it will be well worth the wait. Yesterday, a reason to hook back up my Roku and now a reason to start using my Sling Box again.  It’s a good Tuesday morning.  I would much rather watch TV from my iPhone than my 17” laptop.  Yes, I know.  Very bad purchase decision indeed.
