Internet-TV provider Babelgum has begun sending video content to Italian users of selected smartphones under a new Vodafone service that will come to the U.K. today and other countries — including the U.S. — down the road, Babelgum said. Vodafone subscribers will incur no further data charges for the content if they own an iPhone 3G, Nokia N95 or 6210 for the service, which is expected to ultimately turn into a service supported by advertising. Mobile-video provider QuickPlay Media said cell phone subscribers were tuning in to TV and other content in larger numbers in the third quarter, according to the company’s analysis of aggregated usage data from 15 customers. QuickPlay said that the number of videos downloaded rose 87% from the previous quarter and that users had increased their average monthly downloads 42%. CED Magazine (12/2008)
