Politicians continue to equate huge viewer tune-in as CBS’60 Minutes this past Sunday proves. The November 16 program, containing the first interview with President-elect Barack Obama and future First Lady Michelle Obama, attracted the news magazine’s biggest audience since January 1999. 60 Minutes aired from 730-830p  due to NFL on CBS running over and during this hour delivered an 8.2/19 among A25-54, 6.4/16 with A18-49 and approximately 24.49 million viewers. These numbers are still tentative; final national ratings will be available later this week. (Cynopsis 11/18)

ESPN is expected to win the rights to televise college football’s Bowl Championship Series from 2011 to 2014, after the BCS announced it was “finalizing” a deal with the Walt Disney-owned company. ESPN is said to have bid about $500 million for the prestigious events, an offer that current rights holder Fox Sports said it would not match. The season finale of HBO‘s True Blood is scheduled for this Sunday night.  To date the show has averaged 6.8 million viewers per week. (Cynopsis 11/18)

“The Two Mr. Kissels,” Lifetime’s original movie starring John Stamos and Robin Tunney, pulled in 4.2 million viewers and earned a 3.3 household rating in its premiere last weekend. CBS Television Distribution sold two of CBS’ procedural crime dramas, Numb3rs and Criminal Minds into off-network weekend broadcast syndication starting fall 2010. Both shows were picked up by the CBS Television Stations group in addition to stations from Gannett Broadcasting Group, Belo Corp., Meredith Broadcasting Group, Cox Television and LIN Television as well as others. Both series have been cleared in all top 20 markets.  Across the country, Numb3rs to date is sold in 90% of the U.S. and Criminal Minds is sold in 95% of the U.S. (Cynopsis 11/18)

 

Actor/writer Chris Moynihan is working on two projects for NBC with the first involving Criss Angel, star of the A&E Network series Criss Angel: Mindfreak, reports Variety. The half-hour project is one Angel himself created with producers Dave Baram, Jason Verona and Adam Shulman; Moynihan is writing the office comedy script set in the magic industry and Universal Media Studios produces. Moynihan’s second project for NBC is titled 100 Questions for Charlotte Payne, another comedy about a young woman living in New York who visits a dating service at the opening of each episode. Joan Cusack also has a project in the pipeline for NBC, cites THR. She is developing a comedy about psychiatry based on her own idea in collaboration with the network and Universal Media Studios. John Markus will write and executive produce while Cusack produces with Julie Yen. (Cynopsis 11/18)

 

Recent carriage deals, the largest of which was with Comcast, have allowed the CBS College Sports network to increase distribution by 4 million homes, a 16% bump. The Comcast pact accounted for about 2 million new homes in Atlanta, Boston and Minneapolis, while a deal with Bright House moved CBS College Sports to the provider’s digital-basic tiers in the Tampa and central Florida markets. Online video joint venture Hulu will catch up to YouTube in U.S. ad sales despite having more than 10 times the unique user base (83 million vs. 6 million), according to a forecast from digital media research firm Screen Digest reported in the FT. Screen estimates YouTube will notch $100 million in U.S. ad sales this year, compared to $70 million for Hulu, while each will post $180 million in U.S. ad revenues in 2009. (Cynopsis 11/18)

Jerry Yang is the $1.8 billion man. The stock market thinks Yahoo is worth that much more without Yang at the helm. That’s approximately how much the market capitalization of Yahoo’s stock went up this morning, with the first trade after last night’s announcement that Yang would be stepping down as CEO. Mark Cuban, founder of HDNet and owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team, has been charged by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission with insider trading. Intel is powering a crowd sourcing initiative on Facebook asking any and all animators to contribute to a new computer-generated animated short slated for theatrical release, to be produced and directed by former Sony Pictures Digital President Yair Landau. Intel has provided the necessary tools and 3-D models for animators to strut their stuff; creators whose content is selected for the film will be awarded a new Dell desktop PC weekly. An international jury of animation experts will select the shots to be considered for the film but Landau will have the final say as to which submissions make the final cut. “Live Music,” the name of the CGI short, is a love story between Riff, a rock n’roll guitar, and Vanessa, a classical violin. Online comedy portal RooftopComedy is partnering with legendary New York City comedy club Comic Strip Live to record and distribute nightly comedy performances. During the last two quarters, cable companies have accounted for more than 70% of net broadband additions, about 900,000 more than their telecom counterparts, according to a new survey by the Leichtman Research Group. Google’s search-by-voice application is finally available on the App Store. To grab it, visit this link (the page still shows the old version, but you’ll download the new one). The application was originally announced on Friday, leading to widespread excitement that quickly turned to unrest as the application failed to make its debut on the App Store. Those free iPhone apps will soon be filled with ads. VideoEgg is the latest ad network to extend its ads to the iPhone. Buyers of T-Mobile’s G1 “Google phone” are no longer tethered to the carrier’s network, according to Global Unlock, which said its $49.99 unlock code would allow the handset to operate on any GSM-based network. Just in time for the holidays, Microsoft has struck a deal with Magnolia Pictures that will allow the software giant to offer Magnolia movies on its Xbox Live online service. The move precedes Microsoft’s introduction Wednesday of an updated version of its Xbox 360 console, which lets users play games, watch movies and interact with other users. Hoping to provide viewers with an easy way to move Internet-based video on to TV screens, GridNetworks has announced a new service that would do just that by routing the content through an Xbox 360 gaming console. Sales for Black Friday and Cyber Monday — which each mark the official start of the holiday shopping season — are expected to be flat, as compared with last year, according to a survey of retail CMOs. Computers using Intel‘s new desktop processing chip – the Core i7 – went on sale from Dell, Gateway and others. Intel says the chip will perform between 4 to 6 times faster than its current platform.
