At the end of this season, FOX is shuttering its Saturday late-night comedy sketch show Mad TV after 14 seasons. Mad TV originally launched in 1995 to go head-to-head with NBC’s SNL and presently two Mad TV alums star in their own cable shows: Nicole Sullivan in Lifetime’s Rita Rocks and Frank Caliendo in TBS’ Frank TV. NBC made a commitment with Sony Pictures Television to keep 43-year old daytime soap Days of Our Lives on the air for another 18 months, reports Variety. NBC’s production agreement for Days was due to expire next March and with this new extension the soap will air through September 2010 with another year tacked on if certain perimeters on the show are met taking it to September 2011. The previous production contract between Sony and Corday Productions was for five years and the new shorter time frame points to NBC’s possible reluctance to keep funding the daytime drama which reportedly costs $1.7-$1.8 million per week. MTV’s “TRL” comes to an end Sunday night when the cable network brings down the curtain with “Total Finale Live,” a special paying tribute to the music television series, which began in 1997. The Internet helped kill off the show, according to observers. “TRL” “lost its ability to be unique.” (Iwantmedia 11/13, http://www.nypost.com/seven/11132008/tv/trl_had_to_die_138415.htm 11/13)
The CW wants more of its freshman drama Privileged, ordering five additional episodes taking the season to 18 total. The network will encourage sampling by airing new Privileged episodes consecutively on December 1 and 8 following Gossip Girl, then those episodes will be repeated in the show’s regular time slot on Tuesdays after 90210. At $8.61 a share, Time Warner has a stock-market value of $30.9 billion. Yet, according to the media giant’s balance sheet, just one of its assets, goodwill, by itself is worth $42.5 billion. “Those asset values can’t be right,” said one observer. “Time Warner execs just won’t admit it.” (Iwantmedia 11/13, http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&refer=columnist_weil&sid=aqn9JQA5yHLY 11/13)
When the MLB Network launches in 2009, the Major League Baseball-owned channel will present 1,400 hours of live programming, most notably “MLB Tonight,” which will be telecast every night for six to seven hours during the season. Another show in the on-deck circle is “30 Clubs in 30 Days,” a special that will feature a different team each day during spring training. Broadcasting & Cable (11/12)

YouTube has long resisted selling search results, but it has now caved in
. Now anyone can promote their YouTube videos for specific search keywords on a pay-per-click basis. This should generate substantial new revenues for Google. YouTube has a lot of search inventory. (Viewers search on the site more than 2.5 billion times per month). This should also generate a lot more spam results. Google’s stock price closed yesterday at $291
, the first time it has dropped below $300 since 2005. It’s 44% off of its 52-week high of $725. Most analysts think its cheap and getting cheaper – the average price target
is still over $500. Former analyst Henry Blodget, however, thinks it could fall to $200
(I prefer the bullish version of Blodget myself). (http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/11/13/google-analyst-worst-economic-environment-in-our-collective-lifetimes 11/13)
Comcast has struck a deal with four pop-culture blogs to provide recommendations on the content found at Fancast.com, the cable provider’s online video hub. The days of buying packaged software loaded onto CDs are numbered. Today, Microsoft quietly drove another nail into the coffin of packaged software by launching the Microsoft Store
on the Web. After testing the software download store in Europe and Korea, Microsoft opened up its U.S. version today. (http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/11/13/the-death-of-packaged-software-microsoft-store-opens-on-the-web-for-us-shoppers 11/13)
Microsoft has released the latest set of data for its controversial Live Search Cashback program, which offers users monetary incentives to click through and buy goods from the ads they’re shown. The results? Things seem to be looking good from a ROI perspective, as users are responding to the ads more than they typically do on other search engines (though this isn’t very surprising, as they are being offered money). More significant is the fact that Microsoft’s share of ad dollars has risen significantly, especially in proportion to its relatively weak market share (which has largely languished, despite the new program). A year ago, one of the surprise holiday breakout hits on the Web was ElfYourself.com.
It was a promotional viral video site created by OfficeMax that let people upload their pictures and create dancing elves that they could then send as e-cards to family and friends. ElfYourself turned out to be the fastest growing site last December, peaking at 39 million unique visitors in the U.S. (and attracting a total of 100 million unique visitors worldwide throughout the campaign). Microsoft’s Live.com portal will change significantly this evening. No longer will it be a simple search engine with a few other services bolted on. It’s now a social network, too, pulling in activity information and content from around the web. They’re also launching Windows Live Photos and Windows Live People, and other services. Check it out at Home.Live.com

IBM has signed a contract with Huntsville, AL-based International Broadband Electric Communications to manage the installation of broadband systems to provide high-speed internet access to rural areas over the electrical grid. The contract is for an initial 13 cooperatives in 7 states according to the WSJ, with pricing set to start at $29.95/month. Jim Jannard is formally announcing his customizable digital video and still camera RED system today that aims to take on DSLRs and further push the boundaries of video quality. (http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/11/red-releases-ne.html 11/13)

It will retail for $229.99, contains 4 GB of internal memory and records up to 60 minutes of HD video in 720p. The best thing about these cameras, besides the cigarette package size, is the flip-out USB plug and the “FlipShare” software that comes with it. After you shoot simply plug the Mino into your PC, drag-and-drop the clips you like and publish them to YouTube, MySpace or AOL Video with a single click. (Cynopsis 11/13)
Intel is anticipating a 12% drop in fourth-quarter revenue because of decreasing demand worldwide, a major revision from an October forecast of 3% growth. The announcement Wednesday sent the company’s stock down 7% to its lowest level in 12 years. The Wall Street Journal (11/13) , Reuters (11/12)
A new survey by Leichtman Research Group shows that about 34% of U.S. households now have an HDTV. Other findings in the study include: 43% of those buying a TV in the last year spent more than $1,000 on the purchase; 33% of homeowners who have HDTV have more than one; and only 7% gave quality of HD programming or the number of HD channels as reasons for buying the set.
