HBO has acquired the rights to a documentary on President-elect Barack Obama, which it plans to premiere sometime next year. The film comes from actor Edward Norton’s production company, which has followed the Obama team for more than two years and was granted extensive access to the Illinois senator, along with his top staff, family and friends. Fans of SCI FI Channel’s Battlestar Galactica series can buy a piece of the show as NBC Universal Television, DVD, Music and Consumer Products Group is working with Propworx to provide thousands of unique props, set pieces, costumes and more for a three-day auction event. Walt Disney Co.’s cable networks, led by ESPN, posted operating income of $1.2 billion during the company’s fiscal fourth quarter, $116 million higher than the same period a year earlier. MTV Networks has said it will begin working with Web-widget developer Clearspring Technologies to export the highly portable micro Web sites related to its assets, which can carry advertising as well as content, to blogs and social-networking sites. Bethpage, N.Y.-based Cablevision added 58,000 digital-phone subscribers, 31,600 broadband customers and 25,000 digital-video homes during the third quarter, all of which helped the company report earnings of $27.1 million on revenue of $1.74 billion, a 15% increase. With the solid financial news, Cablevision Chief Executive Officer James Dolan said the company was shelving plans to spin off certain assets, such as its Rainbow Media cable networks. Charter Communications added 98,800 telephony customers in the third quarter, a 60% increase compared with the same period a year earlier. The G1, or “Google phone,” includes an application that transforms the phone’s camera into a bar-code scanner that connects to the Internet to compare prices on the Web and at local retailers. The iPhone is twice as reliable as the Blackberry after one year of ownership, a new study by SquareTrade finds. SquareTrade, which sells extra warranties for cell phones and other devices, looked at the failure rates of 15,000 phones covered under its plans. The malfunction rate for iPhones after one year is 5.6 percent, compared to 11.2 percent for the Blackberry and 16.2 percent for the Treo. Sony Ericsson on Thursday debuted its W705 Walkman phone, which will allow users to download music and popular YouTube videos, as well as stream songs to the accompanying MBS-900 wireless speakers via Bluetooth when it hits shelves in the U.K. early next year. Fresh out of Nokia Beta Labs comes Friend View, an experimental location and micro-blogging service which works both on mobile phones as well as on the web.  To show your location, the Friend View application is using the built-in GPS or the network if there is no signal available (you can also set your location manually). As new research suggests drivers are turning to smartphones equipped with GPS technology for navigational advice, Nokia will launch a project in San Francisco next week in which GPS data culled from handsets will help point drivers armed with smartphones away from traffic jams. Nokia is working with the University of California on the project, dubbed Mobile Millennium, in which devices loaded with Java software will transmit a car’s location and movement to servers that will use algorithms to plot the flow of traffic on a map. Xtreme Technology has come out with two new models in its XLink line, which features devices that integrate mobile and wireline phones. Directed Electronics, the California company that began making car radios for satellite-radio service Sirius in 2004, has announced that it will drop that part of its business after the contract between the two companies expires in January.
