BEATLES TO APPLE: FINALLY SHOWING JUST A BIT OF LOVE
For a limited time, you can pick up a Beatles-branded iPod to satiate the Beatles fan in you. Only 2,500 have been produced and are being sold exclusively at Bloomingdales.
If you’re a fan of The Beatles, then you know that the band has yet to show some love and offer their wares on the Apple iTunes store, much to the disdain of their fans. Despite the new iPod sporting a laser-etched Beatles logo on the front and a silhouette of the Abbey Road album cover on the back, The Beatles have still not come to an agreement with Apple over distribution of their albums through the store.
So, while you do get 13 albums of The Beatles music in all of its glory, ripping it onto your iTunes library and then transferring to your iPod is up to you. If you didn’t want the music sold through the iTunes store, I get that (ok not really). But why not produce digital files loaded onto these iPods exclusively?
Apparently, the deal didn’t include negotiations with Apple at all. Hence, the weirdness. Etchstar, the company which offers the laser engraving worked with Bloomingdales to design the iPod etching paired with the CD’s.
I guess if you have $795 to spend (see price below), you can afford to have your assistant prepare your iPod for you. Big pimpin’.
What’s Included
120 GB black iPod with Beatles branding
13 Original Beatles CD’s
2 Masters and the “Love” CD
Engraved Guitar Pick
Packaging designed by Psycho Bunny
Price
$795 plus shipping

In August Techcrunch speculated that music may be the single biggest factor helping MySpace keep its commanding lead over Facebook in the U.S. market. About a week or so ago, Facebook began an earnest effort to build a Facebook Music application. They didn’t announce this publicly. Instead, Vice President of Business Development Dan Rose
and his team reached out to 8 or 9 Internet music services to discuss what the service might look like. Facebook execs also met with major music labels in New York this week to discusss the project, says one source. MySpace Music continues to sign key music deals – today they announced the addition of the no. 2 independent music aggregator, IODA
, to the platform. Orchard, the no. 1 indie aggregator, has been on board since the launch. (http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/10/22/myspace-music-signs-ioda-gains-6000-indie-labels-and-50000-artists 10/22)
The biggest social network in the United states is still News Corp.’s MySpace, according to new figures from Nielsen. However, MySpace’s traffic has only grown by 1% since September 2007. CBS Interactive debuted a new original scripted web series from creator Jonathan Prince (A&E’s The Cleaner), who has a first look deal with CBS Paramount Network Television. The 8-webisode Novel Adventures revolves around a woman’s book club in LA, who use the books they read to inspire them to tackle real adventures. The series was shot in HD and stars a seasoned cast. It will be distributed for an exclusive 48-hour window on CBS.com, TheInsider.com and TV.com before becoming available on iTunes and the CBS Audience Network. Saturn is sponsoring. (Cynopsis 10/23)
I don’t know about the series because currently, all that exists on the site is a trailer, which doesn’t quite speak to me. I do, however, commend CBS on making the subscribe-for-updates box central on the screen as the loss of repeat viewers seems to be a web series’ greatest barrier. I don’t know that I am sold on shooting in HD either. Seems a bit like an unnecessary cost at this point.
Amazon.com revised its forecast for the rest of the year, taking a more pessimistic view three months after having raised its revenue projections, even as the company reported Wednesday a 48% rise in profit on a 31% gain in revenue for the third quarter. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said the company had seen a recent slump in demand for items priced more than $1,000, adding that the online retailer was taking a cautious view because “all companies have limited visibility right now.”

Today sees the launch of LiveRail for the iPhone
, an advertising platform that could help change the paradigm of free vs. paid apps entirely by allowing free applications to still monetize effectively. LiveRail allows iPhone application developers to embed brief video advertisements into their applications, which play immediately after launching an app (developers get paid on a CPM basis). CEO Mark Trefgame says that the platform is plug-and-play, allowing developers to implement it with a minimal amount of effort and only a few lines of code. Samsung and Netflix have entered into a deal that will allow consumers to download content from the online service through various Samsung electronics products. Initially, only owners of two new Samsung Blu-ray players will be able to watch any of the 12,000 titles Netflix makes available to download, but the companies said other undisclosed Samsung devices would also eventually have that ability. Interesting. Netflix is moving in on any device that will take them at this point. Way to increase engagement on the Netflix site people. Good show.
Harman Kardon has introduced its new GLA-55 speaker set with Atlas woofers, an equalization system that works with a computer and a 100-watt bi-amplified digital amp. But the really “cool” thing is the design, which makes the units look like two blocks of melting ice. ElectronicHouse.com (10/22)

Sony blamed the global economic slump and adverse currency rates in issuing a vastly reduced outlook for profit and sales Thursday. The company cited declining sales of flat-panel TVs and other devices for setting new estimates that would see profit drop 59% for its fiscal year that ends in March.

Citing SanDisk‘s declining market value, Samsung Electronics withdrew Wednesday its $5.8 billion bid for the maker of devices that use flash-memory chips, such as data-storage cards and memory sticks. Samsung, the global leader in making flash-memory chips, also said it ended six months of fruitless discussions after SanDisk continually showed no interest in entering merger talks. The combination of price cuts and increased HD content has driven shipments of HDTV sets past standard TVs this year, according to iSuppli, which predicted annual compounded HD growth will average 20% to reach 241 million by 2012. The market-research firm estimated that HDTV shipments will grow from about 97 million in 2007 to 124 million this year, while standard TVs will decline from about 115 million a year ago to under 87 million units.
