SMARTPHONE DEATHMATCH: GOOGLE’S G1 VS. APPLE’S IPHONE

Today, Google’s long-awaited mobile phone (G1) went on sale online and in T-Mobile stores domestically. Above is a side-by-side comparison of the two phones. Click the image above for a larger version.

The Low Down

Full disclosure. I haven’t tested the G1 yet. The facts above were pulled from the press release. Usability means quite a bit to me as I’m sure it does to most mobile users so I can’t speak to the full picture. What I can say is, I dig that the G1 has pix messaging capability, which continues to frustrate me in its absence with reference to the iPhone. I also dig that it’s cheaper. I don’t like that the iTunes store has been replaced with the Amazon mp3 store on the G1. Even though I have a DRM-free experience on the Amazon store, the iTunes interface is one I have come to love and adore. It’s like the difference between shopping at a Virgin megastore and a Walmart. Lame. I also don’t dig the 1GB included storage in comparison to the 8GB or 16GB. My iPhone sneezes at 1GB.

In Short

I’m not heading to the T-Mobile store anytime soon. If however, you’re down with the G1 and want one stat, click here.

ELECTION MASH-UP: DAILY MARAUDER TIPS THE VOTE by Marauder

ELECTION MASH-UP: DAILY MARAUDER TIPS THE VOTE

I’ve been sent tons of mash-up videos in my time but this one gave me pause followed by an outpouring of hysterics. I always wanted to think that my vote had more power than it really did and now I finally have the chance to tip the scales. . .in the direction I wouldn’t have intended.

Edit the video to include a friend and fire away. I’m thinking 2 parts Scared Straight mixed with 1 part Swing Vote on this one. Whatever you have to do to convince your friends to vote. . . And apart from the message in this video, I care not who you vote for, only that you do in fact vote.

Many thanks to Navin Kamath for sending. . .and simultaneously calling me a loser. Much love.

BROADCAST/CABLE

Showtime has picked up the wildly popular series “Dexter” for two more blood-soaked seasons. The show, now in Season 3, averages 2.5 million viewers each week, which is a 16% increase from the show’s second season. Yahoo!/The Hollywood Reporter (10/22)

MSNBC may have a new star on its hands in Rachel Maddow, the liberal news-commentator-turned-TV-host. Since the launch of “The Rachel Maddow Show” on Sept. 8 at 9 p.m., the time slot has attracted an average of 1.7 million viewers, about double the number tuning in before Maddow’s arrival. The New York Times (free registration) (10/20)

A new study from ABI Research predicts that 20% of Americans with analog TVs will allow those sets to “go dark” after the switch to all-digital signals next February. The study went on to say that 10% will switch to either cable or satellite service and that 70% will use digital-to-analog converter boxes. Multichannel News (10/21)

HBO Canada began a multiplatform ad campaign Monday to raise awareness about its Oct. 30 launch on Astral Media‘s The Movie Network and Corus Entertainment‘s Movie Central. ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA by Marauder

ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA

Google Analytics just got better. Google will begin rolling out a set of major upgrades today to the free Website measuring tool. The new features include the ability to create custom reports, better ways to look at audience segments, the ability to track and measure AdSense inside Google Analytics, an API (on it’s way), the introduction of cool bubble “motion charts,” and some user interface improvements. AOL has updated its webmail application to include a set of plugins that allow users to quickly access current news topics as well as third party services, most notably Yahoo Mail. Historically portals have been reluctant to give users access to their messages on other services, but they have been recently been opening up (which makes sense, given that they want to be a one-stop hub for all of your internet needs). Last month AOL gave users access to both their Yahoo and Gmail accounts from its homepage, and is now integrating the features into its main webmail client (Gmail hasn’t been integrated there yet, but it’s on the way). Comcast has established a beta site for subscribers in a number of its markets to test the speed of their Internet connections. A Comcast representative said the list of cities — which includes Philadelphia, Denver, Chicago, Detroit and Washington — did not necessarily mean that the company planned to roll out its DOCSIS 3.0 broadband service there. WIRELESS

About 150 people lined up outside a T-Mobile store in San Francisco on Tuesday night where the first phone with Google‘s “Android” operating system — the G1 — went on sale for $180, with rebate, under a two-year contract. Remaining T-Mobile outlets begin marketing the G1 today under the carrier’s “Curiosity Is Everywhere” campaign that marketing chief Denny Marie Post said would play out over the next few weeks, mainly on television. Relatedly, Google on Tuesday released the complete source code for the open-source mobile platform. Computerworld/IDG News Service (10/22) , The Wall Street Journal (10/22) , InformationWeek (10/21) , Advertising Age (10/21)

With the first 21 days of October behind us, the G1’s “Official class=”snap_preview_icon”>” launch day is finally upon us. With the first Android-powered handset now in the hands of giddy customers around the country, Google has provided long-awaited details about the Android App Market. AT&T is reporting a boom in customer acquisition and, it seems, a bust in profits. According to a recent earnings report class=”snap_preview_icon”>, the company activated 2.4 million iPhones but lost $900 million in third-quarter earnings as a result of all the data and voice blowing through Apple’s darling. The new Samsung Epix smartphone introduces optical mouse technology to the U.S. market for the first time, according to the handset maker, which on Tuesday released the new touch-screen Windows Mobile-powered device with carrier AT&T. The partners say the Epix was designed for the on-the-go professional with such features as integrated Wi-Fi, assisted GPS, video sharing, 3G connectivity and the ability to sync critical applications. InformationWeek (10/21)

Motorola has introduced what it bills as a luxury phone with a full-color circular LCD, the world’s first, according to the handset maker. The 1.6-inch Aura phone is small, but Motorola said it offered a high resolution, a swivel design that — unlike other such devices — could remain in position while users turn the outer cover to access the number pad. GAMING by Marauder

GAMING

India-based company Games2Win has flown largely under the radar of the American press, but has managed to established itself as one of the web’s fastest growing gaming sites in less than a year. The company was founded by entrepreneur Alok Kejriwal along with seasoned gaming professional Mahesh Khambadkone in June 2007, and now counts around 6 million monthly users with a worldwide distribution.
