Solid performances by cable nets USA, Bravo, Sci Fi, Oxygen and CNBC — along with a major boost from the Beijing Olympics — helped NBC Universal generate $5.1 billion in revenue in its third quarter, a 35% spike from the comparable period a year earlier, and operating profit of $729 million, up 10%. Even without the Olympics, NBCU’s revenue would have increased 8%, thanks to the cable channels. OneTRAK (10/10) , TVWeek.com (10/10)

RjDj, a new iPhone application that was released earlier this week, is one of the coolest things I’ve seen released on the still fledgling platform. Download it now, if only to try it for a few minutes. You can download the full version for $2.99 here, or you can try out the free version (which only has one ’scene’). Microsoft and Epic Games have announced that “Gears of War 2″ is already a hit before it debuts on store shelves Nov. 7. “This is Epic’s best work yet, and we can’t wait to see the response from fans and newcomers to the series alike,” Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski said. Sony will not follow the lead of Microsoft in cutting prices on its most-advanced video game console, saying the PlayStation 3 — $399 for its basic model — is a much better value than competing platforms at half the price. Microsoft recently reduced its lowest-price Xbox console to $199, but Kazuo Hirai, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, asserted in an interview that unlike the Xbox, the PS3 contains a hard drive and plays Blu-ray movies.
