BROADCAST/CABLE

Comedy Central’s Daily Show with Jon Stewart released audience numbers from its coverage of the Democratic National and Republican National Conventions. The Daily Show averaged 1.7 million total viewers and 1.1 million A18-49 viewers over the two weeks of coverage (Tuesday-Friday each week). Specifically, the Daily Show averaged 1.5 million total viewers and 1.0 million A18-49 viewers during the DNC, then up for the RNC with an average of 1.8 million total viewers and 1.1 million A18-49 viewers. If I may, The Daily Show’s coverage of both conventions was brilliant.  Hysterical and informative simultaneously.

(Below) Seriously VH1.  No NEW LOVE SHOWS.  God.  They should re-name the network at this point.  Lame Ass Reality Shows1  Too long?  How abut LARS1?  Sorda sounds like sars.  I dig.

In a new reality series, VH1 will help Antonio Sabato Jr. find his true love, reports Variety. The as-yet-named series from Ish Entertainment will follow Antonio as he searches for Ms. Right. (Cynopsis 9/12)

Even in a weak economy, companies including PepsiCo and Anheuser-Busch are once again investing in expensive, high-visibility Super Bowl television ads. General Electric, the parent of NBC Universal, said it has already sold 85% of its spots, up from the usual 60% this time of year. The Wall Street Journal (free content) (9/12) , Advertising Age (9/11)

Video-on-demand capabilities offered via cable companies, now available in about 39 million U.S. homes, or 35% of the country, will increase to 63.6 million and 54%, respectively, by 2012. That’s according to a report from Interpublic’s Magna unit, which goes on to say that DVR penetration, now at 27.2 million homes, will hit 43 million by 2012. MediaPost Communications (9/11)

Cablevision said it would begin rolling out its network-based digital video recorder early next year. The company’s plans on the DVR front have led to legal battles with movie studios, the most recent of which was won by Cablevision. xchange (9/11) , Light Reading (9/11)

AT&T, seeking to add more television subscribers, is asking U.S. regulators to force Cox Communications to provide access to San Diego Padres baseball games. Cox’s regional sports network is “illegally preventing” AT&T’s U-verse TV service from airing the games, AT&T claims. Microsoft announced that it has improved its Mediaroom IPTV service to bring more show producers and IPTV networks to its platform.  According to Microsoft, its plan for increasing the value of Mediaroom IPTV contains three parts: increase advertising opportunities, make it easier for IPTV networks to port shows to the platform, and make IPTV more interactive. Google’s new joint venture to sell television ads with NBC Universal is said to be laden with caveats. The deal could turn out to be another Google media experiment — like “Googlizing” the magazine, newspaper and radio industries — that “we will not hear of again for a long while.” (Iwantmedia 9/12, http://money.cnn.com/2008/09/12/technology/siklos_google.fortune/index.htm?postversion=2008091209 9/12)

Yahoo announced plans to open up its online music site to feature information about songs and artists from competing services such as Apple‘s iTunes or Amazon’s MP3 store, reports Reuters. The step will be the beginning of a decentralization strategy throughout the Yahoo network to allow outside content flow more freely into the portal. (Cynopsis 9/12)

YouTube is planning to roll out a new feature called HotSpots according to AdAge, helping producers to distinguish what bits and pieces of their videos audiences are actually watching from which parts they are fast forwarding through. The tool is part of YouTube’s Videos Insight analytics software package which tracks views, demographics and popularity of producers’ works. (Cynopsis 9/12)

Google’s YouTube is banning submissions that involve “inciting others to violence,” following criticism from U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman that the site is too open to terrorist groups. YouTube earlier removed videos that Lieberman targeted, many of which were affiliated with al-Qaeda. The Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem, a consortium of media companies including Sony, Toshiba, Microsoft and Cisco, plans to create a digital-standards framework so people can virtually store their digital content and retrieve it anywhere they go. DECE members are expected to reveal full details of their plans at January’s Consumer Electronics Show. paidContent.org (9/11)

At one time, it was tough to cover your tracks after visiting some, uh, questionable sites, but now it’s getting easier than ever. According to Mozilla, Firefox is joining Safari, Internet Explorer 8, and Google Chrome in providing its users with a “private mode” that will not collect any of your browsing history or cookies in the upcoming release of Firefox 3.1. With the Presidential election right around the corner, a new iPhone app called Campaign from Gorloch Interactive tries to provide you with all the dirt on both candidates to make you a “more-informed” voter. BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion is trying hard to make up ground against the iPhone. RIM announced a partnership with Tivo to offer a series of apps to help BlackBerry users communicate with their DVRs remotely. Initially BlackBerry subscribers will be able to use their phones to view programming guides and schedule recordings. The companies plan to build deeper integrations enabling video content saved to the Tivo to be ported over to RIM smartphones. RIM is also working on a similar integration with Sling Media‘s Slingbox. (Cynopsis 9/12)

TECHNOLOGY

With this week’s refresh to Apple’s iPod line, it was hard not to feel at least a little deja vu. Gizmodo has been following new iPod announcements—which often come more than once a year—since 2001, when the first iPod showed up in stores for an astronomical $399. Paradigm has built its new subwoofer, the Signature SUB 25, to optimize the sounds from home theaters by smoothing out problems caused by erratic AC line current. The $4,000 unit features a 15-inch driver with what Paradigm describes as “three-inch peak-to-peak cone travel.” ElectronicHouse.com (9/11)
