CNN attracted an average of 4.86 million viewers from 10 to 11:15 p.m. during the second night of the Democratic National Convention, a window that included the speech of Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York. The network’s performance beat all other cable-news channels as well as the efforts of ABC News and CBS News. TVWeek.com (8/27)

Olympic multiple-gold medalist Michael Phelps has been tapped to host the season opening of Saturday Night Live on September 13.  Musical guest is Lil Wayne.  The same sort of on-TV notoriety befell Mark Spitz after winning his seven gold medals, and it didn’t work out well.  Hopefully, Phelps will well surpass Spitz in this arena, as he did in the swimming pool. ESPN is in the early phases of developing a late-night talk show for its ESPN2 channel that’s being described as a cross between talk radio and the already established “SportsCenter.” One ESPN executive said the show would put a forward spin on the day’s biggest sports stories: “It would be tomorrow’s sports talk … tonight.” New York Post (8/27)

ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA

ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA

Some record companies concerned that Apple’s iTunes is negatively affecting the industry’s overall sales power are shying away from the online service. Musician Kid Rock’s “Rock ‘n Roll Jesus” album, released last year, was not available through iTunes, but still sold 1.7 million copies in the U.S. The Wall Street Journal (8/28)

AC/DC hasn’t licensed its music to iTunes, staying with album sales, which are more profitable.

When it comes to search, Microsoft is trying everything it can to become a serious player. It tried to acquire Yahoo, its latest version of Internet Explorer attempts to steer Web surfers away from Google, and then there is straight-out payola to search advertisers. I am talking, of course, of Microsoft’s Live Search Cashback promotion, which lets advertisers offer rebates to consumers who make a purchase after doing a Microsoft search. Mozilla, the non-profit organization behind the popular Firefox web browser, has extended its search deal with Google for another three years. In return for setting Google as the default search engine on Firefox, Google pays Mozilla a substantial sum - in 2006 the total amounted to around $57 million, or 85% of the company’s total revenue. The deal was originally going to expire in 2006, but was later extended to 2008 and will now run through 2011. YouTube has turned on the ability to add full closed captions to videos. This will not only allow videos to appeal more directly to foreign audiences, but will give YouTube excellent data for searching videos and targeting ads to them. After all, a complete set of subtitles is the same as a transcript of the video. And you can upload subtitles for as many languages as you want. It’s excellent data. Attorneys representing online video sites around the country are salivating today over the Veoh summary judgment decision (I know this because I’ve spoken to a few of them). In a nutshell, here’s what we learned today: If you take reasonable precautions against copyrighted materials on your service, you may be ok. CSI creator Anthony Zuiker signed a deal with publishing house Dutton to create a trio of suspense/thriller “digital novels” that include print, online video and social networking components, reports Variety. At the end of each five chapters readers will receive a code they plug into a website in order to view filmed vignettes that act as a transition to the next part of the story. The first title, Sqweegel, is due out in the fall of 2009 about a retired FBI (who guessed it) forensic investigator who picks up cases on the side. (Cynopsis 8/28)

Why is it that both political campaigns feel the need to have their own social networks. Barack Obama has my.barackobama.com and John McCain has McCainSpace, which just relaunched with a new design from KickApps after failing massively on its own. The new McCainSpace design itself is functional enough, giving McCain supporters a central place to discuss election issues via blogs, forums, videos, and photos. West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin chose Facebook to break the news about his newest film project with producer Scott Rudin - about the birth of Facebook. (He actually admits it was his researcher Ian Reichbach who started the group, given how technologically challenged Aaron is.) He gets points for using the medium he will be writing about to announce the deal and ping the crowd for backstories, but bloggers are already questioning his tech street cred. (Cynopsis 8/28)

Multiplatform music network Music Choice launched a special Live Your Vote thematic programming feature including a politically themed video playlist hosted by rapper/activist David Banner. A special Live Your Vote edition of Rock U features contributions from politically outspoken rock stars such as Tom Morello, Serj Tankian and Three Doors Down. (Cynopsis 8/28)

Lifetime, which doubled its revenue during the recent digital sales upfront, has acquired the ParentsClick Network, a San Francisco firm that develops social-networking Web sites for parents to share best practices in raising their children. As part of the deal, Lifetime gets control of MothersClick.com and more than 200 other URLs, including FathersClick.com. The Washington Post/paidContent.org (8/27) , Mediaweek (8/27) , Variety (8/27)

Video search engine Blinkx is partnering with Getty Images to help users more easily index Getty’s video and photo content. As part of the deal the company will leverage Blinkx’s AdHoc platform to place contextually relevant advertising against Getty Images’ multimedia, sharing resulting ad revenue. Getty’s digital video content includes live footage from the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. (Cynopsis 8/28)

The Android Blog is reporting that Google has officially announced the Android Market, an App Store like solution that allows publishers to upload programs and sell them online. (http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/08/28/android-to-get-its-own-app-market 8/28)

Love it.  A little healthy competition with the iTunes Application Store. An application deathmatch if you will. . .  Google= free and happy.  iTunes = got there first.  Who will win?  Still putting my $5 on iTunes at this point.

An internal source at AT&T discussed the problems fixed by the 2.0.2 update, explaining, in no uncomplicated terms, that the update controlled the UMTS power control in the phone. Each iPhone requires a small amount of power from the transmitter and that power is requested by the phone itself. If too many phones ask for too much power at once, the transmitter starts shutting down, resulting in dropped calls. The iPhone 3G was asking for too much power and, in 2.0.2, has been fixed to stop requesting that power so often. Improved margins and lower marketing costs helped TiVo post a quarterly profit, which has happened just two other times in the company’s 11-year history, and it is the first time the company has posted a profit in back-to-back reporting periods. The company said Wednesday that revenue grew 4%, although its subscriber totals dropped because of increased competition from built-in DVRs placed in cable and satellite set-tops. The New York Times/Associated Press (8/27)

Hollywood studios have given wirelessHD technology a big thumbs-up, basically allowing content to be sent via wirelessHD signals without concerns about piracy. The digital-rights-management technology came out of a partnership between the studios and the cable TV industry’s CableLabs, a R&D think tank. PC Magazine (8/27)

Nikon’s new single-lens reflex camera, the D90, will, according to the company, represent a first for the industry: It will be able to shoot video. The camera is expected to hit store shelves in September and retail for about $1,300. “This is a game-changing product,” said Chris Chute, an analyst at researcher IDC. “The one thing that’s really been missing from the SLR market has been the ability to record high-quality video.” USA TODAY (8/26)

The shaky economy and the lack of a new breakthrough product will limit growth in sales of consumer-electronics products to 1% to 3% this holiday season and in 2009, according to The NPD Group. Key products are reaching maturation levels, said analyst Steve Baker in a speech at Fall RetailVision 2008, where the CEA issued a survey indicating CE sales were shifting to more non-traditional outlets. The survey revealed that 25% of respondents would be up for making a CE purchase at Starbucks, 20% at Ikea, 40% at Bed Bath & Beyond and nearly 60% at Home Depot. TWICE (8/27)

HAI will showcase a pair of new portable touch-screen devices next week, the OmniTouch 8P and OmniTouch 10P home-automation controls, with the model numbers denoting their screen size, the company announced. They both carry TFT Active Matrix LCD screens with Wi-Fi, among other features, and are expected to ship in late 2008. CEPro.com (8/27)
