New technologies tend to follow different trajectories of hype, hope, and despair as they are discovered by different groups of people and finally adopted (or ignored) by consumers. Gartner actually goes ahead and charts this hype cycle

TV makers defied the sluggish U.S. economy in the second quarter to achieve record growth, according to a report by DisplaySearch. The firm reported TV makers increased North American shipments 28% over the same quarter a year earlier. TWICE (8/15)
The company says its latest DVD player, the XD-E500, boosts playback quality for DVDs showing on HD TVs. At $149.99, the E500 is cheaper than standard Blu-ray players. Los Angeles Times/Associated Press (free registration) (8/18)
