  • During this current season seven, people age 35-49 watch it the most, which represents 29% of the total audience. The most-watched episode this season was the season premiere on January 15 that averaged 33 million viewers.
  • The average fan voted, using mobile text messaging an average of 38 times this past April.
  • Last year, American Idol had 4,349 instances of product placement and so far this year there are 3,291 occurrences in first quarter alone.
  • American Idol averaged its largest viewing audience in season five with more than 30 million people tuning in, compared to 12 million the first season and 27 million for this season.
  • People living in the east central U.S. are more likely to watch the show, while people living in the southwest tune in the least.

News Corp.’s Fox will limit advertising on two new prime-time television shows next season to draw viewers and discourage them from changing channels. The new shows “Fringe” and “Dollhouse,” in an initiative dubbed “remote-free TV,” will have half the usual ads. A&E has started shooting the fifth season of “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” the popular series starring controversial bail bondsman Duane “Dog” Chapman, and new episodes are scheduled to debut this summer. The Screen Actors Guild and major Hollywood studios plan to return to the bargaining table by May 28 to resume contract talks that broke off more than a week ago. Renewing talks by then will give the parties a little more than four weeks to reach a deal before the existing contract expires. The U.S. Senate is voting to overturn new, looser media ownership restrictions in the 20 biggest U.S. cities, fearing that media “will no longer reflect the rich mosaic of our country” after possible consolidation. A federal court jury is clearing News Corp.’s NDS unit of satellite television piracy charges in a suit brought by DISH Network that could have been worth more than $1 billion. The jury is awarding only $1,500 in damages from NDS for a single test incident with a satellite TV smart card. Multichannel providers will see annual subscriber growth of 2.1% through 2012, bringing the national total to almost 90% of TV homes, according to a study released Thursday by SNL Kagan. The report goes on to say that about 10% of analog-only TV homes will switch to multichannel distributors after the transition to all-digital signals and that most of those providers would be cable firms. Insight Communications added 15,100 basic-cable subscribers, 16,300 digital customers and 25,500 phone customers in the first three months of the year. Carl Icahn sent an open letter to Yahoo detailing his proxy bid to replace the company’s entire board, naming former Viacom CEO Frank J. Biondi, Jr. and HDNet founder Mark Cuban among the replacements. Yahoo and Google are said to be continuing to talk about a search advertising partnership, but an announcement is not imminent. Talks have “not cooled” after Microsoft withdrew its offer for Yahoo. Facebook is suspending participation in Google’s new Friend Connect project, citing a violation of its internal terms of service. Google is adding visitor demographic information for advertisers on YouTube. A new demographics tab will display statistics on the total views of all the videos uploaded by a person or organization. CBS’s acquisition of CNET Networks for $1.8 billion aims to make the company an online powerhouse. But Wall Street doesn’t seem to be sold on the news. Amazon.com launched a handy dandy MP3 Clips Widget allowing bloggers, social networkers and website owners to showcase song samples from Amazon’s catalog of over 5 million DRM free tracks. When a user listens to a song on your site then clicks over to buy it from Amazon, the owner can earn up to 10% in referral fees depending on the label. The Amazon MP3 Clips Widget comes on the heels of the release of several new digital product widgets from Amazon’s Associates Program, including the Kindle Chicklet, Your Video Widget and Unbox Movie & TV Preview Widget. Vuguru, the new media company run by former Disney chief Michael Eisner, is releasing a new, 50-episode Web series designed as to be a prequel to “Foreign Body,” the new medical thriller by author Robin Cook. Comcast and Cox routinely block Internet file sharing, says a study from the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems. The report challenges the cable companies’ claims that they interfere only when traffic is heavy. Research in Motion reportedly will bring a touch-screen BlackBerry to market later this year, a response to the iPhone. Calling it the Thunder, RIM is expected to sell the multimedia handset through exclusive deals with Verizon Wireless in the U.S. and Vodafone in Europe. RIM declined to provide comment on the report. NBC Sports beefed up its mobile content offerings available via video service NBC 2Go. Provided through FLO TV and MobiTV, NBC 2Go will feature live simulcast coverage of The Preakness on Saturday, The Senior PGA Championship on May 24, The French open from May 31 and The U.S. Open from June 12-15. Electronic Arts, producer of the computer game “The Sims 2,” has inked a marketing deal with IKEA. Players will soon be able to furnish virtual homes with the Swedish retailer’s products. “We know not only players’ passion for creating their own content but their desire to interact with brands. It’s an environment in which players like to blur the line between the digital and real world,” said Nancy Smith, the EA global president for The Sims label. (The Guardian (London) 5/15)
