Customers will be able to buy Vudu’s new video-on-demand set-top box next month, at which time they will be able to choose from and download a selection of 5,000 movies. The movies, which play instantly over a high-speed Internet connection, will upconvert the picture to pseudo-high definition for those users who have HDTV sets. (Yahoo!/Reuters 9/5, The New York Times 9/6) This is pretty cool actually. Vudu brings you new releases and old favorites from every major studio — Lionsgate, New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios, Warner Bros. Studios, and Walt Disney Studios — plus titles from 17 independent and international distributors, including First Look, Granada, Kino, and Think Film. The box doesn’t actually hold 5,000 movies. The movie is downloaded seamlessly while watching. No true high definition availability for the moment but to be offered once deals with the movie studios are finalized. Refresh of 10 – 20 titles a week.
