BROADCAST/CABLE

NBC Universal’s PPV and VOD division created a Flash-based interactive game to test consumer’s knowledge of classic comedies, featured this month on demand. Users can match quotes with characters and guess which films the characters belong to. Comedies featured include American Pie, The Breakfast Club, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Fletch.

After each question is answered either correctly or incorrectly, a segment of the corresponding movie playing August on Demand is shown to the viewer. Ingenius way to generate tune-in from both online and VOD platforms.  I got 7 out of 10 right.  I know, sad.

“The Closer,” starring Kyra Sedgwick, will return on TNT for its fourth season. The show, produced by The Shephard/Robin Co. and Warner Bros. Television, is scheduled to begin new episodes in the summer of 2008. (C21 Media 8/2)

Regulatory approval for News Corp.’s buyout of Dow Jones may not be easy, warns Michael Copps, a commissioner with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. “Not so fast!” he says in a statement. The deal “impacts the local market in New York City.” (http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/Story.aspx?guid=%7B2DB07160%2D98D8%2D4B2C%2DB267%2DC49E6E8D66C6%7D 8/1)

Rupert Murdoch’s Fox Business Network hopes to benefit from its new alliance with the Wall Street Journal. However, Dow Jones has an existing content-sharing deal with CNBC, which still has five years left to go. Still, Murdoch “has a knack for getting those things ironed out.” (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/business/la-fi-cnbc2aug02,1,7860047.story?ctrack=1&cset=true 8/2)

The YES Network, the highest-rated U.S. regional sports network and the cable home of the New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets, is up for sale. The network is owned by the Yankees, Goldman Sachs and former Nets owner Ray Chambers. Cablevision and Comcast are seen as bidders. Time Warner Cable Chief Financial Officer John Martin says the company is considering making an investment in Insight, a company with 650,000 cable subscribers in Kentucky, Ohio and southern Indiana. Earlier this year, Insight split with joint-venture partner Comcast. (The Courier-Journal (Louisville, Ky.) 8/2)

Outgoing Qwest Communications CEO Dick Notebaert has dismissed suggestions that the company should invest in a broadband-video service. “Why in the world would you go do that and incur all that expense when you’ve got YouTube and the direction the world is heading and can still do the broadcast model with more HD than anywhere else with DirecTV,” Notebaert told analysts. Club Penguin, (www.clubpenguin.com) a popular Web site for the preteen set, has been acquired by Disney in a deal that could be worth $700 million. Disney will pay $350 million upfront and an additional $350 million by 2009, if the site, which has 700,000 paid subscribers, reaches certain sales benchmarks. (The New York Times 8/2)

Sad to say, but I took Club Penguin for a test drive this morning.  While I found it mildly creepy that I was pretending to be a child playing in a Virtual World (one can see how monitoring would be critical), the first thing I noticed was how many other penguins there were in every environment that I visited.  If you had a chance to read the article in Wired about Second Life this month, the first criticism is always that there are not enough users to populate the environment.  While many have created an avatar in Second Life and taken a test drive through the program, the level of engagement is not currently high enough to bring users back on a continual basis.  In Club Penguin, I could make my penguin sing, wave, and jump around.  I could also target other penguins and throw snowballs.  As long as parents feel comfortable with the security controls, I think this a very engaging environment for the K6-14 target demo.

Just to recap for a second here, The Company is the dramatic miniseries from Ridley Scott featuring some really hard hitting actors like Chris O’Donnell, Alfred Molina, and Michael Keaton.  Check out a sneak peek of the series below.  The cinematography in this clip alone blew me away and for an online video box to generate that reaction, it must at least be view-worthy.
