(Below) This is a very good plan in my opinion. If Apple didn’t collect data from iPhone users in this way, they would be at the mercy of AT&T to provide this data. That said, users may find it annoying to set up an account before using the phone. In essence, most want to use their phones simply as a communication device and anything that impedes that usage could be frustrating for the customer.
Apple is requiring anyone that wants to use the iPhone to sync music and video tracks with their computer to register with iTunes. That means entering credit card information but not necessarily buying anything. The idea is to create a financial relationship with consumers outside of the AT&T partnership, say analysts.
NBC will launch a new mobile sports channel and provide live Web coverage of the U.S. Open golf tournament. NBCSports.com will stream live coverage of today’s and Friday’s rounds of the Open, along with on-demand interviews. NBCU has partnered with MobiTV to provide live coverage of sports events, including the U.S. Open. (Mediaweek 6/13)
Sony Ericsson will be the first cell phone supplier to deploy Gracenote’s Mobile Music Platform, an integrated solution that simplifies content search and discovery, music recognition and playlisting. Gracenote maintains a digital database of 60 million music tracks from around the world, allowing for easy transfer of music among PCs, online music stores and mobile devices. The platform will be compatible with Sony’s newest Walkman models and the K850 Cyber-shot phone.
Orange UK has announced a prototype of a portable wind turbine that can be used to charge mobile phones. The 150-gram wind turbine, dubbed the Orange Mobile Wind Charger, was designed for use at the U.K.’s summer music festivals, whose attendees often live in tents for days at a time, the company said. Orange commissioned professor Shashank Priya at the University of Texas at Arlington to develop the technology. (cellular-news (U.K.) 6/14)
