Day 3 of Digital Hollywood.

The conference has come to a close but the convergence mentions are still coming.  Convergence: another fun office lingo term to use whenever you run out of the fun standards like touch base, to your point, and leverage.  The final day of Digital Hollywood came to a close today and I must say after 40 convergence mentions, I stopped counting.

Advertising Innovation! Broadband, On Demand, In-Game, Social Networks, RSS, Blogs, PODs & Mobile

Speakers:

Baris Karadogan: Partner ComVentures

Rob Crumpler: President & CEO: BuzzLogic

Jason Spero: VP Marketing AdMob

Jason Klein: President & co-Founder Special Ops Media

Louis Moynihan: Senior Director of Strategy & Development Pheedo

Paul Bowlin: Regional Sales Director SpotXchange, Booyah Networks

Key Takeways:

Advertiser’s Comfort Level

  • Advertiser’s not very comfortable in the online space inserting pre-roll ads to user-generated content.  User-generated content runs the spectrum from the most risqué to the most banal.  Separating the many pieces of content presents an obstacle to the advertiser.

Determining ROI in the Online Space

  • Online vs. TV advertising is highly trackable giving advertisers the ability to track ad views and viewer’s engagement with each ad.
    • TV ads don’t signal any specific level of engagement because the viewer could be getting something from the fridge while the TV is on.  Comparatively, ads played before a piece of content, are more likely to be viewed.
  • Two types of online ads:
    • Direct-response driven à metrics dependent
    • Brand driven à not metrics dependent

Pros of Mobile Advertising

  • New way of advertising to a consumer
  • Relatively uncluttered ad sphere
  • Personalized ads by user demographic including age, gender, etc.

Social Networks – The Future of Advertising, Marketing & Brand Building

Speakers:

Ray Doustdar: President & co-Founder Teamdating.com

Brian Fitzgerald: President Gorilla Nation

Rebecca Weeks: Director of Business Development Real Girls Media Network, Inc.

Liddy Manson: COO Freewebs

Evan Schumacher: CEO Going.com

Key Takeways:

Recommendations for Online Start-Ups

  • Don’t invest in online advertising until a general consensus is reached where users are aware of the site and know what is being offered

Widgets

  • Traffic driving mechanisms
  • Similar to RSS in the method that information is accessed across the internet
  • Ex. Girls Media solicited Sears to build an appliance-buying guide widget powered by Sears (garnered 6-figure revenue for Girls Media)

Future:

  • Affinity-based social networkingà much more effective in attracting ad $$

Wall Street analysts are predicting that AT&T will choose Echostar over DirecTV as its sole marketing partner for satellite-TV services. AT&T, which currently has partnerships in place with both providers, is expected to pick between the two by year’s end. (Yahoo!/Investor’s Business Daily 6/13)

Unlikely bedfellows Liberty Media and Echostar are working on a joint offer for satellite-communications provider Intelstat Ltd. Liberty is scheduled to take over control of DirecTV, EchoStar’s main competitor, in the coming months. (The Wall Street Journal 6/14)

ONLINE SERVICES/INTERACTIVE MEDIA

(Below) To put this in perspective for you, a typical cable on demand channel offers approximately 150 hours of content or 140 hour-long titles.  2,000 on demand video titles would be quite a bit more and comparable to what online movie services such as Movielink and Cinemanow are offering.Sony has partnered with Matsushita and three other firms to bring an Internet video-on-demand service to flat-panel customers in late 2007. Initial details of the service include a video library of 2,000 video titles including movies, music videos, foreign-TV dramas and cartoons.  (Forbes/AFX News Limited  6/13)

News Corp.’s MySpace is launching a partnership with leading modeling agency Ford Models to provide an online destination for the Ford Models Supermodel of the World model search.  Worldwide sales of Internet protocol television (IPTV) set-top boxes will soar to 7.9 million units in 2007, a year-over-year growth rate of 111 percent, according to a new report by Strategy Analytics. The Asia-Pacific region will account for a bulk of the growth, amounting to 45% of the installed base, followed by Europe with 33% and the U.S. with 13%. Worldwide DVRs installations are expected to almost double from 15% penetration in 2006 to 29% by the end of this year.

Sprint wants to build a WiMAX network to offer high-speed, wireless Internet access to 100 million people, and to that end the company is reportedly mulling its financial options. One idea that is being floated, according to people close to the matter, is the spinoff of Sprint’s WiMAX unit as part of a joint deal with Craig McCaw’s Clearwire Corp. Another option is seeking investment money from the four cable companies who are already in a joint venture with Sprint to deliver the Pivot wireless service.  (The Wall Street Journal  6/14)

ComScore began measuring the reach of widget providers, which create applications that can be used to produce and play embeddable videos, photo slideshows and music playlists. The system is an important first step in helping advertisers determine the reach of these small apps, which could carry their ads and spread them virally across the net on social networking pages, blogs and other sites. So far MySpace and Facebook, the top two social networking sites, don’t allow third-party ads on their sites. But many see widget-based advertising as the sites’best chance to monetize their huge user bases.

Google has created placement performance reports for its AdWords service, giving advertisers detailed performance metrics on how their ads performed on specific sites. The advance should do wonders for accountability. Until now contextual advertisers have been unable to see which sites are generating the most click-throughs.

EBay is pulling all of its advertising from Google’s U.S. network in what is widely seen as punishment for trying to crash eBay’s user conference in Boston this week. Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Derek Brown says: “The two companies have been on a collision course for a long time.” (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2007/06/14/BUG9LQER0T1.DTL 6/14)

Peer-to-peer video distributor Veoh Networks announced its user base grew to 12.5 million in May, a 19% increase over April and a 184% bump since officially launching in February. Veoh’s owners include Time Warner and Michael Eisner’s Tornante Company.

Veoh Player (Must be downloaded to computer to use)

This is my first time using the Veoh player and I must say, my experience was pretty disappointing.  I couldn’t figure out how to add a video for the longest time.  Once I finally figured it out, it took me 9 minutes to download a 2 minute clip over a broadband connection.  Got time?  Use the Veoh player.

Sony Pictures Television and video sharing site Grouper launched a new user-generated companion feature inspired by FX hit Rescue Me. Real-life fire fighters are encouraged to submit videos of what it is really like working in a firehouse. Each episode (“first fire,” “camaraderie”) is kicked off with a clip from the show.

Chime.tv is a new video site that features a range of channels, user-friendly creation tools and a powerful search function to help wade through the thousands of videos added to the web each day. Click on the video player to expand and contract the image. Click on the logo in the top right hand corner to be taken to the source site. Search for content from a number of popular sites including YouTube, Veoh, Metacafe, Google Video and DailyMotion. Scroll down on the left of the player to the “Web Shows” category for a selection of the best web originals, from Sanctuary to Goodnight Burbank.

I like the idea of providing users with channels based on niche interests in an attempt to mimic a channel surfing type of environment.  That said, until sites like this one combine both professionally-produced content with user-gen content, I don’t think they will be successful.  As a user, I want all content in one place available in a way that I can search specifically for what I want or channel surf.  I also want to be able to filter professionally produced vs. user-gen based on what I’m looking for.  Like Google says, users want to come to a place where they can search and find what they’re looking for as the top search result every single time.  In the video case as compared with the text case, video search could be either a specific search OR channel surfing within a particular niche.

(Below) This is a very good plan in my opinion.  If Apple didn’t collect data from iPhone users in this way, they would be at the mercy of AT&T to provide this data.  That said, users may find it annoying to set up an account before using the phone.  In essence, most want to use their phones simply as a communication device and anything that impedes that usage could be frustrating for the customer.

Apple is requiring anyone that wants to use the iPhone to sync music and video tracks with their computer to register with iTunes. That means entering credit card information but not necessarily buying anything. The idea is to create a financial relationship with consumers outside of the AT&T partnership, say analysts.

NBC will launch a new mobile sports channel and provide live Web coverage of the U.S. Open golf tournament. NBCSports.com will stream live coverage of today’s and Friday’s rounds of the Open, along with on-demand interviews. NBCU has partnered with  MobiTV to provide live coverage of sports events, including the U.S. Open.  (Mediaweek  6/13)

Sony Ericsson will be the first cell phone supplier to deploy Gracenote’s Mobile Music Platform, an integrated solution that simplifies content search and discovery, music recognition and playlisting. Gracenote maintains a digital database of 60 million music tracks from around the world, allowing for easy transfer of music among PCs, online music stores and mobile devices. The platform will be compatible with Sony’s newest Walkman models and the K850 Cyber-shot phone.

Orange UK has announced a prototype of a portable wind turbine that can be used to charge mobile phones. The 150-gram wind turbine, dubbed the Orange Mobile Wind Charger, was designed for use at the U.K.’s summer music festivals, whose attendees often live in tents for days at a time, the company said. Orange commissioned professor Shashank Priya at the University of Texas at Arlington to develop the technology. (cellular-news (U.K.) 6/14)

Shifts in consumer habits have ushered in a new wave of female gamers to an industry that traditionally has been dominated by males. VP and head of production and development at Maxis, Lucy Bradshaw, is one of a growing number of female executives focusing on expanding gaming audiences beyond the coveted 18- to 35-year-old male demographic. Bose’s introduction of noise-canceling headphones to the marketplace has helped revolutionize consumer opinion regarding headphones. The devices use tiny microphones to monitor outside noise levels, which are then relayed to internal circuitry that creates a sound wave 180 degrees out of phase with the original sounds. A new study has found that seven out of 10 U.S. adults either own or would like to own a flat-panel TV in the near future. The Hitachi Home Electronics America-based report bodes well for future sales in the flat-panel market, which has had to compete with increased competition and plummeting prices. (TWICE 6/13)
